Shortly after my first topic concerning cheese, I learned that my lactase count was 2. (It’s supposed to be between 10 and 100). My question is addressed to those of you who are familiar with their lactase counts and have as low a count as mine.

Do you ever eat cheese? How much in one sitting? Half slice of tasty? 4 cubic cm of aged cheddar? Or is it supposed to be totally out of the table if lactase is this low.

(My gastroenterologist just avoids to answer such questions and suggests that i see a dietician, which i currently can’t afford)

Perhaps you could get hold of a dietician online, there's always some people advising everywhere.

I've heard that cheese is supposed to be lactose free.

But if you feel issues when eating a slice, then avoid it. Go with vegan. It's pretty good too.

And hopefully its just a secondary intolerance, so you'll be able to indulge later.

Hi there,

I'm a bit late but thought I'd share.

I'm lactose intolerant and while I don't know what my lactase count is, I know it's very low and I can't have much without the symptoms. But I've been taking lactase enzyme tablets before eating dairy for the last 10 years of my life and it makes my life as easy as if I wasn't intolerant in the first place. You just need to figure out how much lactase you need to cover what quantity of food. I use Lea Gogo here: leagogo.com and I know that by taking one that has the strength 12500FCC I can have a full glass of milk which is like 15g of lactose.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I’ve done quite a lot experiment concerning dairy after this post.

It would have been a great joy to be able to consume just a couple of cheese slices indeed, let alone milk&yoghurt (that would have been dream-like)

I first tried lactose free dairy. Milk and yoghurt. They didn’t work for some reason. Then I tried very low fat cheese (such as light swiss) with lactase tablets. No. Than i tried hard goat’s cheese and stuff( goat’s feta or goat’s cheddar sort of things), still with lactase tablets. Not taking my chances with that 0.000000001 gram lactose in them. Didn’t work. I thought, perhaps it’s the high saturated fat in them. I tried very little quantities but on a regular basis (very little, every day, still with lactase tablets, hoping these A2 casein dairy might actually work)

No.

Then i cut off all dairy, ignoring cravings, lamenting my fate. And started to use calcium citrate pills.

Wow that sounds like such a long and painful journey! I'm so sorry they don't work for you! Maybe there is more that your body doesn't tolerate than just the lactose..
