Sardines on Toast. Under the grill, or not?

I need to up my calcium intake, but haven't had sardines on toast since I was a child. I can't remember if you put the sardines on the toast, and then under the grill (like cheese), or if you eat them cold on the toast? I do remember that when I was old enough to make my own that I used to take the bones out. Funny what you remember, and what you don't.

Hi Nellie237.

Hope you’re doing ok?

Toast first then add sardines 😋

Though sounds like it would work either way if you want the sardines hot never thought of that!

I'm good thank you. I hope that you are well too.

If you've never had hot sardines on toast, there's probably a good reason........thinking about it.......the smell alone would probably be enough to put me off. 🤨

Haha good point! Similar to smoked kippers smell 😝 . I don’t mind too much as like fish!

I mash the sardines, bones and all, add a little lemon juice, salt and pepper and spread them on hot toast to make a full sandwich, or two open faced sandwiches.

Thanks nuigini,

Lemon & pepper sounds like an excellent idea. I wish we didn't need the bones, but we do.

Toast the bread, put the sardines on, mash in the bones, and under the grill again would be my take on this. Sesame seeds/tahini also good for calcium.
