Does anyone from here post on Tripadvisor about safe places to eat for coeliacs or safe holiday destinations or even use Tripadvisor while planning meals out or holidays?

Absolutely not because whereever I travel there are hardly ever any places to eat GF. However having said that in Exeter, Devon the mexican meals chain Chiquito do a GF menu which is not bad, but then salads usually dont have gluten in them anyway! So no prizes! The worst places in the world to get something GF is in airports or on plances, one exception is a fruit salad (ok large) in Frankfurt airport at 7.5 Euros (!!!) yes that's the price for something fresh, otherwise everything else is full of Gluten and/or lactose. Poor travelers who forget to pack their GF food and have to take a tiny carry-on bag due to the prohibitive (exhorbitant) prices of taking a bigger case on a plane. I can go on for hours about airports and airlines and BAD BAD FOOD.....

Are you aware that should you get a letter from your GP about your Coeliac Disease many airlines allow you an extra allowance so you can meet your dietary needs.

I have eat twice in Chiquito’s without any problems and it certainly wasn’t salad.

Airline food I would never touch but have never gone hungry from Gatwick.

Tripadvisor is quite a good starting place to look for gf places to eat, so I do use it, depending on where I’m going.

Penel I have an App on my phone called Find Me Gluten Free. It will mapquest whatever area you are in and give you a list of restaurants in the area that offer gluten free options and also dedicated gf establishments. They also give the Trip Advisor reviews on all of them! It’s a great resource for traveling.

Hi I have only just seen your question, have you joined Coeliac UK as they have a really good directory of places to eat all over the UK plus members are adding new places that are coeliac friendly(Gluten Free) all the time. You do not need to have coeliac disease to join them and they have a great community of people to help you to eat both at home and out and about GF.

Their helpline is also great and they have a directory that they post out to you , when you join, which lists all foods that are available in the supermarkets and stores that are GF. Additionally they have a phone app for members so you can scan food whilst you are shopping to see if it is GF.

If you were asking about holiday destinations I believe Italy caters very well for coeliacs, from research I have done they test children for coeliac disease so it is picked up at a much earlier stage than this country and subsequently coeliacs are catered for virtually everywhere, though I believe the incidence of it is only 1-2% higher overall than this country.

Hope that helps.

I am both gluten and lactose intolerant. I travel a lot and use Trip Advisor both to find suitable restaurants and also post about them myself. Italy is gluten free heaven and I had a great holiday on Sicily last year where many places do GF pasta and pizza. I am heading for Finland later this year which from what I have read is also very suitable for coeiliacs. European restaurants are obliged by law to have a list of meals and which contain gluten and lactose and other allergens, and some can provide a separate GF menu. In the USA the better hotels can provide GF and LF options at breakfast.

Hi have just come back from bulgaria have joined a travel ceoliac site which you can print out in any language and give to restaurant, for them to read to let them no your ceoliac. I found thus useful.A lot of there restaurants serve gf food now days so didn't find it a problem.

We go to Tenerife a lot there are lots of restaurants that have gluten free Chinese included. The supermarkets are well equipped too even had a pack of 6 gluten free beers for under 3euros for us you can't go wrong.

I always do although not always accurate it gives you a heads up in the right direction. Tenerife is great for gf. Even the doorman on some restaurants can advise and most menus have gf shown.

I have found most hotels I have been to think they know about GF but they don't have a clear about cross contamination.
