Hi Sid,

The two could be connected.

Undiagnosed and newly diagnosed coeliacs are often lactose intolerant. It's because the villi needed to process lactose have been damaged by eating gluten.

The good news is that many can reintroduce dairy after about 6-12 months. By that time the gut is much improved. Unfortunately this is not the case for everyone, myself included.

More good news - eating dairy free is easier than it's ever been. There are lots of interesting alternatives. Time to experiment and explore in your local health food stores!

An endoscopy isn't the nicest thing to have to have, but it's normally over pretty quickly. I know because I've had several now and can say with some certainty that you will be fine. The staff are usually great wherever you go.

If you are really nervous re your endoscopy test, ask them to knock you out completely, that's what I did & it is literally only for a few minutes & it made it easy. For me, the worst thing was the wind afterwards! 😂However plenty of people have it done without any sedative or even the banana mouth spray, my Mum was one of them & she said it was a breeze....as you can tell she's braver than me! These things are never pleasant, the anticipation can often be worse than reality but by having this done, you can gain more knowledge about your condition & then start gaining control over it & getting your health back. You will go through a grieving process when you have to give up certain foods, but this will pass & you will change the way you think ie you will focus on what you can eat as oppossed to what you can't eat & best of all, you will start feeling a thousand times better health wise. Good luck.

I know I'm just going to get so nervous as soon as I walk into the endoscopy unit.thanks for the good luck

I completely agree with the other comments. I too hate endoscopies but you should ask for sedation not just an anaesthetic spray. We all panic for 4 or 5 seconds while the camera goes in but its panic done then, that's all you have to get through.

I can't tolerate lactose when I've been 'glutened' by accident. It is normal for your body not being able to create lactase when your small intestine has been damaged. After 2 or 3 weeks of being gluten free you will probably find you can cope with lactose again but don't start with four cheese GF pizza washed down with a pint of milk! :-)

Good luck!

I chose to stay awake for my endoscopy, but if I need another one I will choose to be knocked out. It doesn't hurt but I found it claustrophobic. I agree with the other replies once you get your diet sorted you will feel much better. 💐

Ur name sounds Asian? I am Asian and finding it so so hard finding the right o enough food of Indian type!! Could you help?

in reply to

Hi Sid, lots of Indian food is gluten free including pakora's (onion bhaji's) which if made traditionally use chickpea flour also called gram flour and besam flour.

Also many Asian shops sell many gluten free flours like rice flour and ground rice as well as Gari (coarse tapioca starch) which is great for gf cooking and baking.

Here's a link to some Indian dishes:

And I'm sorry to jump in on your question to Fatima, now I've always had sedation with an endoscopy because you're out for the count while they do it, so its easy peasy and good luck with it.
