Hi Jill121
Did those blood tests of yours include vitamin D and B12?
I believe that lack of vitamin D can a cause of bone pain. A lack of vitamin B12 can be a cause of needles.
A deficiency in both can be more common in Coeliacs.
It might also be worth checking that you have had a recent test for diabetes.
I hope you can get sorted out.
Hi Jill,
I suspected that you might've had those two tests but it was worth asking, just in case.
If I was you, I would be looking next not at vitamins but at minerals. Specifically at zinc and magnesium to start with.
A zinc deficiency might be the cause of your hip pain and it's not something that is commonly checked by GP's.
Magnesium is also fundamental to bone health and health in general. I'm currently being investigated for Magnesium issues caused by being a coeliac. I wasn't aware that I might have an issue with this until B12, vitamin D and all the other standard tests had been done.
Hi Jill121, I'm a Naturopath, and coeliac, and often see people with your problem despite going gluten free. There could be several causes but all connected to the fact that you're intestins were not doing there job. The first thing to do, if its not already done is to remove dairy. Dairy is often a major player in joint pains and inflammation. The next major cause, which is also associated with dairy is high acid levels. This is due to a bad intestin with inflammation and very often a high acidic or acidifying diet.
People often think that after being diagnosed then its all over but its only the beginning. You need to clean out the crap thats accumulated that shouldn't be there, repare the intestins and then fill up on the vitamins and minerals that you're still lacking. Its long but definately possible. You're best bet would be to find a good naturopathic doctor to work with in order to restore your body to health. The important thing is not to discourage because there is always a solution.
I agree with Karen, you need to look to your diet again.
You say you eat the right food, but were not very specific. For example, are you totally gluten free - only meat, fish, veg and fruit? Or do you eat other things? As mentioned on this site before, gluten and wheat is hidden in many things like e numbers and additives. The supermarket free from foods are a hidden minefield of problems if you're very sensitive. Your level of sensitivity may have altered, and what you could consume may be different now.
Are you dairy free too? If not, keep a note of whether you react after consuming dairy. Then make an informed choice. In some people dairy causes coeliac-like issues (I get the runs and sinus problems, so don't eat it) but you need to be certain yourself.
Your sweating may be the result of being exposed to gluten. I suffer from what I refer to as coeliac-sweats. I know when I've been 'got' as - after the bloating and pain starts - the next thing I experience is sweating. It's not hot flushes, I've had them, these are different. I've stopped them by going extensively gluten clean, not even drinking alcohol, making everything at home. It's boring, but it has to be done.
I have a similar issue in that I have RA (which Ive had for 30+ years). I get terrible joint pains especially in knees, hips and back and on xray there is nothing to see! It doesn't stop the pain crippling me, but it's difficult to make people understand when there's no visible evidence. You have my sympathy.
Keep your chin up, get to the pain management appointment and make sure you come away with an action plan, ask about the magnesium and zinc supplements other have mentioned and keep mobile (it's hard, I know).
All the best
S
I am gluten free as well and got away from gluten for reasons of joint pain . I am also dairy free. When i accidentally injest dairy I get joint pain. You might try this and see if it helps you.
I agree with the posters above. You may also want to check out this link on possible gluten cross reactivity. thepaleomom.com/2013/03/glu...
Don't know if this will help but I get pins and needles from salt. I used to think it was from corn because it especially happened after going to the movies. Plus I remember when I had allergy tests done corn slightly showed as an irritant. But since I've cut out salt I'm not awoken in the morning from my hands tingling.
