Have any coeliacs been prescribed Naproxen for back pain

I have coeliac. I was prescribed Naproxen 250mg for back pain. On Friday I had two, one with lunch and one with dinner. I had, in the morning, taken omeprazole.

By 2.00 am I was doubled up with pain, sickness and diarrhoea. Could only two tablets have this effect and so quickly

My Hubby was diagnosed 9 years ago and is sensitive to the smallest amount of Gluten etc, he takes these for his Knees, and he said it is the only one that does not give him an adverse reaction of some kind

Steve my hubby did say that if he takes pain killers or anti inflamatory tablets of any kind for a period of time they do give him stomach cramps etc, maybe best not to take them every day.

NSAIDs have that effect on me too and even one can do it. Check first that they don't contain gluten and if they don't you may be sensitive to anti-inflammatories

Naproxen was prescribed for my joint pain. Following a really bad episode the dr took me off them saying they could be making things worse for my stomach. There are lots of meds you shouldn't take within an hour or more of each other, especially stomach meds, iron etc -and with or without food- check with your pharmacist?

I remember one of the speakers at the Gluten Summit (don't ask me which!) saying that coeliacs should never be given omeprazole. It was explained why and made sense at the time but I can't remember the mechanism.

I suffered the most severe pain I've ever experienced when prescribed omeprazole.

I was told by a Dr that there is only a minuscule amount of actual required drug in most tablets we take so they 'pack out' a decent size tablet, so we can pick it up, with 'fillers' (excipients). Dr's can look up ingredients of tablets if you ask. I have been writing to my local MP as I have problems with all tablets. The last reply I received said that European and national legislation guidance, sometime this year must state any ingredient, such as wheat or gluten, be labeled as such, similar to those on food packaging. So we can make an informed choice, it is coming...sometime soonish!

Ibuprofen has this effect on me, within about half hour of taking it. It also makes me wheeze badly. I think both are non-steroidal anti inflammatories.

NSAIDs are hard on the stomach. They inhibit prostagladins, which basically protect the stomach lining.

I think that celiacs have low levels of these prostaglandins anyway - it may be one of the factors that enables gluten sensitivity and celiac disease to get started in the first place.

In extreme cases, NSAIDs have been shown to cause villous atrophy.

Probably they shouldn't be used by celiac patients.
