There's nothing in a normal potato that should trigger a coeliac reaction. My guess is its the butter, being derived from milk and some coeliacs have related milk issues.

Watch out for margarines though as most contain buttermilk. I use Vitalite or Pure range is OK. Aldi also do a nice sunflower spread which is gluten and dairy free.

Maybe try one with one of the above spreads and see if it makes a difference.

hi thanks so much as the margerine i used i hadnt had b 4 so will stick to vitalite it was asda olive spread i used x

Hi Barry, are these potatoes you bake yourself? If you get these in cafes they may well be contaminated by gluten- if you watch people they pick them up after handling sandwiches and put them on the bread board and cut them with the bread knife. I used to think they were an ok option when out but now I never touch them in cafes.

Ah good point. I had this recently myself in a cafe in Olympia Exhibition Centre. I made them give me a new one which had been cut using a clean knife.

To be fair once I raised it they really did make a point of doing it properly.

However that was only because I could see what they were doing and had the kitchen been out of sight it would have been a trip to toilet-land again.... :)

Hi Barny a few points to consider

- when newly diagnosed many coeliacs can't tolerate any dairy until the villi grow back so that means avoiding milk, butter etc for 6mths and slowly reintroducing

- Pure branded dairy free olive oil spread is v good and tastes nice (avoid Soy as it can interfere with yr hormones & is inflammatory)

Are you being careful & making sure no one shares your butter or spread? Any small breadcrumbs can cross contaminate you

Do you also react the same to part baked bread GF baguettes ? Or chickpeas, pears, apples? If so you may be reacting to FODMAPs (search our directory). Complex carbs/ sugars can cause problems in anyone with bowel issues or damage.

I reacted to everything I ate and bloated like a whale for 6mths - 1 yr when going strictly GF - it does settle as the villi heal.

As I've said before - permanent milk problems, I think are a more of a problem in coeliacs than many (inc. doctors) realise.

See Swedish study: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/173... where they discovered 50% of coeliacs they tested had coeliac like gut reactions to milk.....

Its not a well-researched area but one I think needs more attention.

Flora's not dairy free - has buttermilk in it. Try Vitalite or Pure instead.

I cannot eat baked potatoes due to the fibre content, love baked potatoes but now eat sweet potatoes so I don't feel so bad. Also when you reheat potatoes it changes the fibre structure which also can cause problems.
