i use anthony warrall thompson gf cubes cornflour and gravy browning old fashoined but it works and u have go a nice thick gravy oh and meat juices

I use the Marigold Swiss Bouillon which's organic and I buy the vegan low salt one. I buy it from the free from section of Tesco's. It's lactose free and gluten free.

I make a cup of soup with this on a cold day sometimes as well as using it for gravy.

I use the Bisto Best Roast Lamb Gravy - allergens are Soya & Milk. There does not appear to be anything in the ingredients that has gluten in it. It is not in the Coeliac Food & Drink Directory but have had no problems with this or the others although it does say that it is produced on a line which handles wheat flour. I think that so many times they are just being over cautious.

although you may not of had a reaction i have, but i guess its down to the batch maybe, it is a risk, but two of my friends use it, one is ok the other isn't, 50/50 i guess.

Yes personally I've never tolerated it well and my stomach bloats afterwards. I tend to avoid all products that say they may contain or are made on a line as I'd rather avoid the risk.

It's not in the directory because they make gluten products in the same factory but not on the same line - or something along those lines. If you call them they clearly explain the processes, so you can work out if you want to eat it.

Personally, I make my own, but only because I can't eat onion too.

i make my own ... Kallo beef stock cube in boiling water or the veg water thicken with cornflour and crosse & blackwell gravey browning and black pepper

its the best that i have found

meanioni in reply to essexgirl

As a variation on this:

Kallo stock cube, water from veggies cooked (if from sweetcorn/sweet potatoes it zizzes it up a bit), meat juices from cooking, splosh of wine (red if beef cube, white if chicken cube),teaspoon of marmite/bovril, sprinkling of herbs, top up to a pint with boiling water, thicken with cornflour.

To get additional flavour, tickle the umami taste buds in your mouth with a squirt/dash of gluten free tamari soy sauce or balsamic vinegar.

meanioni profile image
meanioni in reply to essexgirl

Marmite in UK is gluten free - only common allergens it contains are yeast and celery.

I should add I did go an re-check on the Marmite website and did a bit of googling just to make sure!

I thought that bovril had gluten in it, or is that just the powdered drink not the jar?

meanioni in reply to Footiemagpie1

Jarred Bovril is definitely gluten free. Haven't tried powders, so can't say.

And again, I did re-check this on the Bovril website and through some googling.

We used the Just Bouillon instant gravy powder which was totally gluten free and tasted nice. They offered chicken, vegetable and beef flavours. You just used it like Bisto instant. However it disappeared off the shelves in our Waitrose and after contacting the company they said:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

"Thank you for your email regarding our Just Bouillon Gravy Granules.

I am afraid that distribution is low as our Just Bouillon Gravy Granules have been discontinued. Decisions to stop making a product are not taken lightly as we understand the disappointment this can cause, but it is regrettable that on occasions the demand for a product is not sufficient enough to justify the cost of production.

We do however produce both Kallo and Just Bouillon stock cubes which can be used to make yummy gluten free gravies. I have attached some recipes for you to try.

We hope that this helps with your enquiry and we look forward to the pleasure of your continued custom in the future. "

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

We had stressed that they were the only totally gLuten free instant gravy in the marketplace but the bottom line is they didn't achieve sales. They also never advertised it! We came across it by chance after mistakenly buying the Swiss Bouillon, which we didn't like, and which had to be made in saucepan.

Kallo did provide recipes for making gravy from scratch which was nice but rather removed from what we were trying to achieve!

If anyone else wants to write to Just Bouillion & urge them not to discontinue their GF gravy granules then here's more info on it & their website: justbouillon.co.uk/gravy_gr... and where to buy them - stock pile & urge them to reconsider whilst you can...! justbouillon.co.uk/location...

Hi There, I've used Bisto Best (all flavours) for many years & never had any reaction to it. In fact, I think Bisto Best was first brought to my attention when it's details were published in the GF food directory.

Hi all, i use bisto best all flavors too, also add a kallo organic cube plus meat juices and i whizz in some meat as well, for us i doesnt get better than that!!! oh plus some corn flour to thicken, tried potato flour but it makes it too gloopy.

Yes we used Bisto best and felt ill and bloated every time. Everyone reacts differently to areas where there 'maybe gluten' or it's produced 'on the same line'

Bisto best rich and roasted chicken gravy just hits the spot for me and mine, allergy is soya.My german daughter in law says it better than anything they have over there and always takes a load back with them.If you live near a Lidl store they sell the large size much cheaper than any where I have seen.

Bisto Best is great but if you have milk issues, their produce is full of it.

Qu. why is there milk in gravy??? Never worked that one out!!!

Hey….am a veggie too…so Bisto Onion Gravy for me..Kallo cubes too….and Marigold boullion…..I tend to make a stock with cider and leeks…some onion skins and unpeeled carrot for colouring…herbs too….cooked for half an hour and then left to stand until cool….strained and then reboiled…Bisto thickened….the jar variety not the Gravy Granules that did me on Christmas day after cooking for 17…in bed for a couple of days post that ‘glutenisation’….

I also make my own Ketchup..Chilli sauce..relishes and chutney also…..been in kitchens since I was 15 and catered for all sorts…now I have to cater for me…..first time for everything I suppose…

Interesting - how do you stop the cider making the gravy too "sharp"?

Knorr stock pots gravy is GF and I have just bought a jar of their chicken gravy granules to try out.

I too have used Kallo cubes in the past .

AWT's gravy was too salty for me.
