Hello all.

My gp surgery requested I book a routine appointment as in my recent blood test my TPO was raised to 129. Reference range at hospital lab is less than 50. So my questions are

What does this mean

Should I be asking my gp any specific questions or asking for further tests?

Many thanks

See this site for a description of the TPO levels: medicinenet.com/thyroid_per...

This article covers one of the potential causes of high TPO levels - thyroiditis: medicinenet.com/thyroiditis...

TPO stands for thyroid peroxidase and is an enzyme involved in making thyroid hormone in the thyroid gland. You probably had a test for antibodies against TPO and a raised result can signify an autoimmune response against the thyroid gland, typically as a result of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This can cause hypothyroidism with the occasional burst of hyperthyroidism. Hashimoto's occurs more commonly in coeliacs.

I hope that helps! Your doctor will probably want to discuss any symptoms you might have been having and offer thyroxine replacement treatment.

Thyroid problems and coeliac are closely associated. Search our directory on here for the tag 'thyroid'. My sister was diagnosed with Hashimotos Thyroid a year after the coeliac diagnosis. It can be trial and error getting the thyroxine levels right. Do see a good endochrinologist & ask advice from the Thyroid UK group also here on HealthUnlocked. Keep us posted on your journey & diagnosis as it may help others.

Many thanks for your replys.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 3 years ago after my first child. I have been on thyroxine since. As I have been suffering with abdominal bloating and discomfort which I specifically relate to eating certain food groups such as bread cakes pastry etc my dr did some blood test which showed raised TPO which he said were decreasing with thyroxine o don't need to be worried . He also told me I have a b12 defficit for which I'm taking oral supplements.

This weeks app gp told me celiac screen was negative at 3.6 and that it's IBS also said TPO of 129 is nothing as my levels are still reducing ?! Said the computer just generates letters when a test result is out of normal range ...
