Raised IOP in non-operated eye following a week face down posturing

I had a vitrectomy on my weaker eye four weeks ago and had to posture facedown for a week. I already had high IOP in the other eye and now my pressure is quite a bit higher and my consultant has given me extra drops for it and is already talking about having a trab.

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this. If so, was the raised pressure temporary? The pressure in my operated eye has remained low because that one had a trabeculectomy three years ago.

Hi there,

I’ve had a few surgeries myself for retinal detachment and glaucoma (including an aqueous shunt implant), so I completely understand how challenging it can be. I just wanted to share that in my experience, certain steroid drops like Dexamethasone (Maxidex) - which are commonly used to reduce inflammation after surgery - can sometimes cause a rise in eye pressure.

It might be worth speaking with your consultant about this. There is an alternative steroid drop called Lotemax that’s known to be gentler in terms of pressure, though it may not be quite as strong as Maxidex .

Of course, your consultant will have specific reasons for the treatment plan they've chosen, and they might have ways to manage or adjust things based on your situation.

Wishing you a smooth recovery...
