cataract surgery and istent

I’m having my second cataract op soon. An instant was offered to be done at the same time but I’ve declined this as it didn’t go well in my other eye.

I was recently measured for my new lens but they didn’t do an eye test to see what prescription the new lens needs to be. I don’t recall if they did one when I had my first eye done. How do they know what strength my new lens should be or are they all just standard? I’m having a distance lens. I think perhaps I’m misunderstanding how it works and thinking it’s like a contact lens with a prescription.

can I ask why the stent didn’t go well? I’m hoping eventually this may be an option for me as I have cataracts, but at the moment my optician says that i should wait.

The stent caused my pressure in that eye to drop too low, to 4 and my vision is blurred. The stent was done a year ago and I delayed having the cataract in my other eye done in case it goes wrong too but it’s got to the stage now where I can’t put it off any longer.

Hello. The replacement lens they use for cataract surgery isn't a standard prescription lens. They will have done a test called biometry, which measures the length and curvature of your eye, to find out the correct lens to replace your cataract. This corrects your distance vision but you will probably need glasses for reading. You are right in thinking that the new lens has a prescription which will be the right one for you, to give you the best distance vision.

The biometry machine works by you looking at a light and the measurement is done quite quickly and you may not have been aware that, that is what it does. They can't do a cataract operation without this being done first. It is sometimes done at a clinic appointment before the day you have the operation. I hope that explanation helps.

I have my second cataract surgery with a glaucoma operation not a stent, it was called a Gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy and the recovery is 8 weeks, a stent was not offered to me, my eye is now recovered and I was discharged a couple of weeks ago. Why not speak to your consultant and see if they can offer you something else which is not a stent. Best of luck.
