Hi, I had my pre-op yesterday for my first cataract op, happening next Monday. Just wondered whether anyone else had their spectacles tested after their scan or not. Mine were and they seemed surprise to find the prescription was very different to what the scan machine had said I needed for my new lens. I asked if it made any difference to the scan results and they said no, they would be going with what the scan told them. Feeling worried though.
Cataract pre-op: Hi, I had my pre-op yesterday... - Glaucoma UK
Cataract pre-op
Enigma I am pretty sure I didn't get my glasses tested after the scan. They just scanned both eyes and as far as I remember that was that. My prescription changed completely after my cataract ops, although I did still require varifocals. Sorry I can't be of more help but I'm sure Sunshine will get in touch as she's going through same process as you at the minute. Hopefully Sunshine will be able to put your mind more at rest and help with your worry.
Hi Witchie346. Thanks for your reply. Like you, both my eyes were scanned, I thought it was a bit odd about the specs and am wondering whether to ring up to ask if there is any significance in testing them after the scan. I did ask at the time if the specs were being taken into the equation and they said they would be using the info from the scan. But one cannot help worrying!
Giving them a call is a good idea as you will just keep worrying about it, I would be the same I know. I'm sure you just want it over and done with now. All the best for your op
Yes think I will try them. Thinking about it the people doing the scan said they were not that busy, so checking my specs afterwards might have just been out of interest to see the difference between the scan and the specs. But still worrying!
Giving them a call will hopefully stop you worrying and it could well be just them seeing the difference like you say out of curiosity. It will make you feel better once you find out and that's the most important .
Hi again. I have just rung the eye department and it turned out to be hard work understanding what they meant and finding out what I wanted to know! Must be the language they use. Any way from what I understand they looked at the spectacles to see the prescription and distance measurements for comparison with the scan. I had to keep asking if they would be using the scan results and not the spectacles prescription and the person just kept saying they would be using distance measurements. Then they asked if the spectacles prescription was current, but as it was about four years old and a compromise prescription between distance and reading (as I did not want bifocals) said they would put that on my details and also to mention that on the day of the op! After asking several times I finally got the answer that they would be using the scan results and that the spectacles didn't come into the equation. Pity I couldn't have spoken to the people who dealt with my scan yesterday really, but hopefully from the final answer I got it means the scan results will be used and not the spectacles prescription. But of course I will be mentioning it again on the day!
That sounds like a bit of a nightmare conversation but it sounds like after a lot of false starts you did get the answer in the end. Yes definitely mention it on Monday. The ones who did the actual scan would obviously have been ideal to speak too but nothing is ever that simple unfortunately. Do you feel less worried now you have actually spoken to someone? I hope so.
Hi. Feeling a little less worried, but will probably be a nervous wreck on Sunday thinking about the next day. Also hoping the alarm clock will go off as it has not been used for months!
It's natural to feel nervous, I can't sleep before any eye appointment at all so I never need an alarm clock!!! I'm sure come Monday evening you will be saying how easy the op was and any blurriness should have hopefully cleared by then. Try and enjoy your weekend
I just had my eyes scanned and they went with that. My glasses didn’t come into it. I now have brilliant long distance sight but near sight is bad.
Hi Enima bless you so many questions whirl around inside your head! Mine too! They scan both eyes, mine as I was having both cataracts done in short space of time, so all measurements are ready for the second op. They did look at my glasses, however the prescription would have been totally useless even though it was only last year I had new glasses, my distance vision has changed so much, probably due to age 🤣I would trust the up to date scan information far more than an old prescription so trust in the information they have. Yesterday for my pre op round two it was a breeze, blood pressure, eye pressures, health questionnaire, eye vision test and COVID test, all in 25 mins amazing! I can wait to get new glasses in a couple of months time! It’s been so long making do. My op is tomorrow so hopefully be in contact over the weekend, try and relax it will be easier than the you think. x
Thanks Sunshine. Sounds as if I had all the same tests as you did. My blood pressure was a bit high, apparently. Not surprised though - usually it is OK or even slightly low. Wishing you all the best for tomorrow. Will be thinking of you. x
All the best for tomorrow and I will be thinking of you x
