Eye pressure advice

Hello again,

I’ve not posted for a while thank goodness!

But I have a quick query that I would like some advice on.

I had my 3 month follow up check on Friday.

November 2023

Stopped Cosopt a month before appointment pressure’s back up to 29 and 36. Back on Cosopt twice a day.

February 2024

Taking Cosopt twice a day pressures 19 in each eye.

Around 5 mins before my pressure was taken I had a cup of water, I never do this, I just thought I hadn’t drunk enough and I could be a bit dehydrated. Could this have elevated my eye pressure in anyway? I’ve been thinking about it all weekend and I’m worried as my next appointment is now not for 9 months. The pressure was taken at 4pm. I don’t know why I didn’t mention it whilst I was there, but I didn’t think about it until afterwards.

I had my pressures checked in January at the opticians…they were 15 and 12.7. This was at 10.15am.

Can the machines be so different or can it be the time of day, I put my eye drops in around 7.30 - 8am.

Should I ring the hospital or am I just being a bit over the top, how much could the water elevate it if at all?

Thanks and sorry for the long post.

Katy

Pressures change all the time, when I was first diagnosed 11 years ago I have an appointment at my local opticians who checked my pressures due to my family history on both sides the appointment was in the morning and the were high 28 left 30 right I think anyway he ask me to come back in the afternoon and he would check them again so I went back just before they shut for business and he did them again and they were still the same and then he refer me to the local eye clinic at my local hospital to see an Opthalmologist and then I was diagnosed, so I should worry to much about yours they will probably just change your drops although I am not an Opthalmologist that is what happens to me if my pressures go up my limit is usually 20 before they change my prescription, yours might different or even the same. All the best for the appointment hope it goes well

My understanding is that you can have more variation in pressures during the day with closed angle glaucoma than you have with open angle glaucoma. Do you know which glaucoma you have?

At the moment as I understand I have treated narrow angles and now high eye pressure being treated with eye drops.

Hello Kathy, The eye pressure varies during the day. Sometimes they need to measure the 24 hours (or 12 hours ) measurements. It also varies depending on the devices . As standard Goldman tonometer is used . I don’t think drinking water does not affect on the pressure. With best wishes.

Hi there Katy. IOP can rise after drinking water. A study shows that it can increase IOP by around 2-3 mmHg, which is not significant. It would be impossible to say whether this was the reason for your pressures being slightly higher at this appointment, it could be but it might not be. Eye pressure can fluctuate throughout the day.

I personally would try to not worry about it. Take your eye drops as prescribed to try to lower your IOP and then your eye specialist will monitor it again at your next appointment.

Many thanks that is very reassuring.

My next appointment is in 9 months time and I was concerned that I may have messed it up, especially now that my next appointment is a long way away but I think this last week I have realised I was perhaps panicking.

Thank you

Perhaps stress may be a factor as this seems to raise pressures according to a quick web check.

I was told to drink water more regularly than I do

Different machines can give different results

That’s happened with me I normally can tell when my

Pressure is elevated my sight is not sharp as usual

You may have been apprehensive and that may elevate

Pressure

Take care 🍀🇺🇦👍❤️

For some reason ...I feel that everything affects your pressure like taking a shower before ...eating, drinking water, sleeping, ...some drs don't care to ask...just ...this is what it is so here's more meds...I know mouth breathing is a big one...we all probably need to learn how to breath right. It's hard to find a smart dr that takes it all in and knows they don't know everything . Most of them think they know it all. But if u take a shower right before an appt your pressures will be higher...I asked the Dr she said this is not possible but...it happens...same thing with eating drinking and stress. Even walking if your heavy or injured. It's all about the breathing.
