looking to determine if anyone has gone through an SLT after a cataract surgery. Key question is whether the laser can operate through an artificial lens.
I am 43 and weighing up a trabeculectomy vs an implant (preserflow is what is being pushed).
The alternative is an SLT (poss 20% iop reduction) couple with a cataracts replacement which will also see an ion reduction of a similar amount. Not assuming 40% overall.
Anyone done this?

Hi there. I am not sure if you have come across the support group on our website, but there was a specific one for trabeculectomy vs preserflo, which was a very informative and helpful presentation. I would highly recommend you watching it as it may help you with your decision.
In terms of success rates, trabeculectomy and preserflo are usually more effective at reducing IOP than the SLT. The SLT may also need to be repeated within time, as it usually only lasts 1-5 years.
Your eye specialist will be able to help you make your decision. It sounds like they might think that the preserflo is the best option for you, as you have said above that it is being pushed. I have provided a link to a preserflo information leaflet below, this is also very helpful.
I wonder if you saw the Glaucoma UK webinar on Jan 15 th ? " Glaucoma and Cataracts"
The opthalmic surgeon explained the different types of Glaucoma surgery, the advantages and disadvantages including cataract surgery. It was very comprehensive and he answered some interesting questions.
The webinar may be on Facebook now I think or You Tube at some time.
There may also be some previous and usually also excellent Webinars stored on You Tube. There was one last December 12 th "Trabulectomy versus Preserflo".
I have found that the more I can understand about the various procedures then it all gradually helps deciding the next step. Sometimes the Glaucoma Helpline and optiticians will listen and have some good ideas...and often a bit more time !
Hi Sightbeyondsight. I am in New Zealand so might be a bit different here but I had SLT in Oct. Myopic - about minus 13 or 14. Had cataract surgery 2008 but lot of problems with one eye - requiring removal of lens after it moved in 2022 and somehow went into the vitreous part. It was replaced and then had retinal detachment and a lot of swelling. On steroids for months. So didn't think I was good candidate for SLT but pressures were up over 30 so hospital specialist wanted to give it a go. Went back for check up Dec and it had worked - quite surprised really and so was specialist. No drops now for glaucoma and pressure in the late teens eg18 so he's happy. Don't have to be seen for 6 months which is really good after monthly visits for two years with lens issues.Hope this helps and hope all goes well for you.
Hi, I had SLT last year following raised IOP in both eyes. I have had cataract surgery in both eyes many years ago. The raised pressure caused vision loss in one eye so SLT was the next step for me to reduce IOP longer term. Prior to SLT , I was on medication to rapidly bring down the pressures and my eye drops mostly changed too. I had to wait 5 months before being seen by the specialist consultant, by which point I wasn't sure whether it was the change in eye drops or SLT which reduced IOP. It turned out on day of appointment my pressures were slighter higher, so now talks of repeating SLT or possible trabeculectomy.
I don't know if this is helpful but just thought I'd share my experience.
Good luck with controlling your pressures and I hope you can come to a decision that's best for you.
I had SLT a few years ago and worked well...Then had Cataracts removed and drainage stents put in more recently. I also wondered if SLT possible again after having the latter....pleased to see any updates from you on the subject...my next check up is September and as one eye has film forming over it now....bled a lot during Cataract removal...and impairing vision. I;m wondering about asking about YAG too.....
