Has anyone had or discussed this type of surgery? It sounds very promising with high success rate and limited complications from what I’ve read from the literature.
Canaloplasty Surgery: Has anyone had or... - Glaucoma UK
Canaloplasty Surgery
I had canaloplasty in my right eye combined with a cataract operation last November. It was all done under local anaesthetic and the recovery was good. It also reduced the pressure in my right eye to about 10 which was a brilliant result for me . I had become unable to tolerate any glaucoma eye drops after years of use so for me the procedure was an all round success.
That’s great news, I’m glad it worked for you, and from what I read it can be repeated? I’m going to enquire about it on my next visit, I have pigmentary glaucoma which is proving a bit of a challenge to get under control, but I think it might be a good option down the line for me, as I believe it clears the pigmentation from my drainage meshwork as well.
I am puzzled why this procedure is not done more often. Longwalk’s IOP decreased from 26 to 10 which is a miracle. What am I missing? Perhaps the moderators can shed some light.
I thought my only option was a trab. I will discuss this with my opthomologist in 5 weeks. Jon - please let me know how your discussion goes and I will do the same.
The only thing I will say is that my consultant was surprised at how well this procedure worked for me. I think your surgeon is likely to want to do a trabeculectomy if you have not already had this procedure as it is a proven treatment and successful for most people.
Ah, you are saying that your great result was not typical. I read that a trab can be done after this procedure if the IOP is not lowered enough. My thought is since the ABiC is such a low risk procedure, it is worth a try. I will push for it when I meet my surgeon. I have extreme dry eye syndrome from my years of drops and that greatly complicates a trab so I’ve been told.
I too have very dry eyes after many years of drops and i believe this was part of the reason my trab was a failure. I am drop free and my pressures are stable now but it has taken 5 years and abouf 10 surgical procdures to get to this point.
