Well went to have my eyes tested for the first since my Trab op last April, picked out some frames online from Specsavers 2 for 1, should have come to £138, but because of one eye not being that good it came to £300, oh well, must of needed what they said, but then I was told I have the start of 2 cataracts, here we go again I thought, but had an idea one eye was a possible cataract, as when i look through that eye only, the vision is slightly darker than the other. Despite trying to get an appointment with the consultant the past couple of months, which I should have had last September, just got to wait for them to remember I'm a patient of their's !
All the best everyone

Sorry to hear you've had such a rubbish day Floki, that's some difference in price with your glasses, I take it you need varifocals ? Is the optician going to refer you to the eye clinic regarding your cataracts ?
So many eye appointments are being cancelled at the moment but eyes don't stop deteriorating unfortunately just because there's covid to contend with.
I hope your eye pressure was still ok?
Fingers crossed you get an appointment date soon 🤞 x
Hi Witchie, thanks for your reply, pressure was 19 in the trab eye, cant remember what she said for the other eye but she did say they were both good, and no problems at the back of the eye, so not all bad news, nothing for it but to make and bake a cake lol !! Best wishes
Thank goodness your pressure was fine and no more damage, so some positives. I had both my cataracts done when I was first diagnosed with Glaucoma and compared with a trab it's a walk in the park. You need a mug that says " Keep calm and bake "
I think Redshoes is right you do have to keep phoning and pestering the eye clinic, you shouldn't have to but it does seem to be the way it is at moment.
Hi Floki, sorry to hear this. Keep pestering them for an appointment- as Witchie says. eyes don’t stop deteriorating as I know only too well. After the first lockdown my check up was delayed for 6 months, my pressures had crept up and caused loss of some side vision. So I ended up having a trab as an emergency. I also have early cataracts and it’s tricky doing them after a trab as it can mess up the first op and you have to have the trab re- done. So as you say ‘here we go again’! I’m back to the clinic in a couple of weeks but have decided I don’t want a trab on the other eye if I can possibly avoid it. Good luck and hope you get an appointment soon xx
Sorry to hear about your delays Floki. I have just had cataracts done (caused by all the glaucoma surgery I had earlier this year). I went private because my consultant told me I would be waiting a VERY long time on the NHS. This pandemic has got a lot to answer for!!
Yes I totally agree with you about the pandemic, it has caused a lot of problems for those of us that have so far got through it, but better that, then the poor people who have lost their lives, and their loved ones left behind. How did you find the cataract surgery ? think I am a long way off from that yet though. Best wishes
Cataract surgery was fine, although the second op in my left eye was complicated by the fact that previous glaucoma surgery has caused my pupil to get stuck down so the surgeon had to dilate it manually rather than with drops. He is a fantastic surgeon though - he’s done all my recent glaucoma surgery - I wouldn’t trust anyone else at the moment. The cataract surgery has certainly improved my distance vision greatly and once I get a pair of glasses for reading I will be sorted!
Sorry to hear about your eye problems. As others are saying you will have to keep pestering the eye clinic for an appointment, especially as your September one was missed. I had a similar thing happen to me. I was being seen every year for about 10 years due to high pressure but was told that I didn't have glaucoma just extra thick corneas but also had cataracts which would need ops. I was removed from the waiting list in 2019 by mistake and when it was rectified in 2020 of course there was Covid and no appointments were being made. I finally had got an appointment in June 2021 when I was then told I had glaucoma, which was very upsetting. Two cataract ops followed in June and September. Since then have been twice to check pressures. First time they were high - so more drops needed. The one I had last week the pressures were 14 in each eye. If it hadn't been for the earlier mishaps I might not have developed glaucoma , who knows! So very important you go all out to get an appointment soon as eyes don't stop deteriorating (as others have said). If you cannot get through to the eye clinic, try to find out the consultant's secretary's phone number or email address and let her know what has been happening with you. I have resorted to this and it does help get results. All the best. x
Hello Floki. Calling the appointment section isnt the best route. The best thing would be to call and ask to speak to the eye secretary. if you know the name of your consultant ask to speak to their secretary. If no joy going down that route ask to speak to the PALS department (Patient Advice Liaison Services) or the ECLO (Eye Clinic Liaison Officer). They will be able to get in touch with the eye secretary for you and they in turn will check with the consultant and get back to you.
