Starting again! Why pressure in one eye only?

Hi, I have jumped from my usual Health Unlocked forum for Arrhythmia because today after a routine eye check I have been diagnosed with Glaucoma. I was stunned, and while i am something of an expert on Atrial Flutter and Fib, I know nothing about Glaucoma. My main concern is it is high pressure in one eye only, with a reading of 30, and I have been referred for a CT scan to try and understand what is causing the pressure in that eye. Has anyone else had anything like this and what are the likely causes? I am scared I must confess. Thank you in advance for any help.

Thanks so much! Keep in touch about your irregular rhythm as I have had quite a bit of experience with that, three ablations now but so far so good. What your consultant has said about the oxygen does make sense, my arrhythmia was constant so perhaps could be a link . Good luck with the scan and thank you 🙂

Hi .Glaucoma can effect just one eye .

Once you get referred for scans etc.... then you are in the system and will get sorted .

It is very scary getting a diagnosis , we all feel that , so empathise with you.

I am at the start of my journey too, I have narrow angles , no Glaucoma as yet 🤞🏻But have laser treatment next week called an iridotomy .

I was referred by my opticians in Jan, so been a long journey really to get to this point.

If you go on Glaucoma UK website there are lots of podcasts and videos you can access that are very informative x

Hi Ranobeer, your post was very interesting. I have never had a scan of my eyes, I didn't realise that some people have that. I had raised eye pressures (occular hypotension) for about 15 years with high pressures (over 30 without drops). I was told that it was only described as glaucoma when you had actual damage to the optic nerve, so was told that I had glaucoma 5 years ago. However, consultants do seem to vary on the diagnosis, one diagnosed glaucoma at the start of my journey even though I hadn't got any optic nerve damage at that time.

It is interesting how one condition that you have can raise the risk of another condition. Recently I found out that having psoriasis can raise your risk of diabetes, even in slim people.

Glaucoma can present itself with a higher eye pressure reading in one eye than the other. MRI scan is usual in this case. Treatment to both eyes for glaucoma is usual to keep the pressure down in the other eye, to prevent glaucoma from developing and affecting your vision.

Thanks Helen

Hi ranobeer it is a total shock to be informed out of the blue you have glaucoma but as others have said you are in the system now and you will receive treatment which is the most important thing. It's scary but now you have this forum for any support you need. Once you have had your scan the consultant will know more and begin your treatment plan.

Your dog looks gorgeous, I have my lovely Lu who is a cockapoo.

Good luck with your scan x

Hi I have Glaucoma in one eye only and the pressure in that eye has been very high- it was 44 when I was first diagnosed. I’ve had a Trabeculectomy and it’s now down to 10. Pressure in other eye is normal. Tbh I’ve never asked why only in one eye - I’m just very glad it is only one eye! 😊.

Thank you. The doctor in the hospital and the opticians seemed to think it was unusual and you know what it's like - you think oh dear, what does this mean? etc. It's been very reassuring to see replies saying it's actually not uncommon. These forums are so good. I think I had added 2+2 and made 96! So, I'm assuming the head CT scan is all normal procedure too - I had been thinking that something very sinister must be pressing on my left eye. Maybe it is, but hopefully they are expecting to see a blockage or something like that?
