PEX glaucoma and cataract surgery

I have pseudoexfoliation glaucoma and bilateral cataracts. The ophthalmologist has referred me for cataract surgery in one eye. The other, she says, does not need it yet - her opinion not mine. Slight smile from me.

Ophthalmologist fully explained all the possible complications and the fact that it is only when he/she has got into the eye that the amount of exfoliation can be seen. It may be necessary to abandon the surgery and for a referral to be made to Manchester or Liverpool eye hospitals.

My concern is that I had my eyes tested in July whilst the affected eye was in recovery from multiple epithelial abrasions. I have a pre-op assessment in 2 weeks time. Does anyone think I would be advised to have eye test as I suspect my visual acuity has changed?

Also, can anyone help with this question? Apart from the need for reading glasses, I use glasses for driving. I can see well around the house and garden. I do not find these glasses suitable indoors. My understanding is that the artificial lens inserted during the surgery will be that of my current prescription. Will It be a case of adjusting to this?

Any help or encouragement will be gratefully received.

Hi Windflower. You could always ask at your pre assessment appointment to have your vision checked, just to see if there are any changes. It shouldn't make any difference to the lens implant, as the strength of that is measured by the length and curvature of your eye.Following cataract surgery you usually have good distance vision but will need glasses for reading. You may find that once you have a clear lens in your eye that your vision indoors improves.

Helen, I am sending the biggest cyber hug ever. I have tears running down my face in appreciation of your response. I have searched all over the Internet and nowhere have I been able to find details about the lens fitted into one’s eye. Exactly what I wanted to know. All I can add is thank you, thank you, thank you. xxx
