I’m a suspect for this , have 1st hospital Appt 13 th April, since Opticians referred me in Jan after he saw narrow angles and eye pressure was up , for Glaucoma screening at hospital . Moorfields in Bedford.
It’s been an anxious wait and I’m trying to gain info whilst waiting .
Is treatment limited for this as opposed to the more common type open angle?
Is it just laser to iris and drops ? What happens if they fail ?

Hello. The first form of treatment for narrow angles is normally laser. This is called an iridotomy. Another option is lens replacement which widens the angle. This is the same procedure as cataract surgery. If the consultant feels that drops are still needed to lower the pressure more after either procedure they will advise you,
Hi I have narrow angle glaucoma and have had the laser treatment. I was terrified but it was absolutely fine ... honest.
They treat with laser not drops. The laser treatment took 12 minutes total from when they called me in to when I got back to my friend who was waiting .. she times it.
They laser a small hole to allow drainage. Drops for a while to ensure no infection and no discomfort after . They then call you back to check the holes are draining well. And then is all is well they just monitor you yearly.
Sadly I have eye pressure is back up due to other reasons but the narrow angle treatment was really fine. I did ask my gp for diazepam to settle my nerves and that was helpful but if they were to do it again tomorrow I would go with no worries.
The pressure came down right away and were down even more after 6 months . The pressure didn’t increase because of the closed angle that worked perfectly. Sadly I am just vulnerable to open angle glaucoma . But that’s just me it doesn’t mean you will .I waited 6 weeks , it felt a very long 6 weeks but it was ok. There is no denying this is scary but we have each other and we know what it really feel like .
That’s a shame Su, after it worked well , sorry to hear that . Are they doing the laser again or the lens replacement on you ? Yes glad to have found this site and hope it grows into a supportive friendly forum . X
Thanks for the the response and kind words. The laser treatment completely work and is still good. So closed angle won’t ever be a problem again. I am on drops now for the high pressure . But hopefully all you will be completely sorted with just the laser. What’s your pressure ? Are you having headaches or visual disturbance ? I did originally but the laser cleared that up brilliantly .
I Went to opticians in Jan for normal appt .My Iop was 24 left eye 23 right .
Angles , left 15 , right 35 . Did Field vision test that was ok.
He did a thorough exam, and referred me to Moorfields eye clinic at Bedford hospital for routine Glaucoma screening, I have that in April .
No visual disturbances , but been having slight headaches on and off throughout the day for last 2 weeks .can last a few minutes then disappear .
These started after I had a delayed reaction to the Covid vaccine . I reacted to vaccine a week after having it with the classic side effects including headaches . But after feeling rough for 3 days felt fine , but just this slight headache , also feel like I have a bit of a cold and sometimes getting buzzing in my ears and feel pressure like you do on planes. Think it might be ongoing reaction to vaccine but not sure .
I’m also type 2 diabetic , so also have to be screened yearly for retinopathy another condition that causes blindness , I have have background retinopathy for last few years which is the early stages , but common amongst diabetics who had diabetes for years , like myself . Though often the opticians when they check my eyes during their exam can’t see it .
Just counting down the days for appt , but they do say they just do the tests, then they show the eye consultants who will then let us know weeks after the tests , so all a waiting game right now x
