hi, today I had a migraine and stayed in bed with curtains closed until 5pm. I suffer with FND and within the last year functional tremors. I used to have migraines maybe 3 times a year now it’s more frequent. It can be frustrating but I try not to let it get to me. Before 2018 I was relatively healthy but after apart from FND I seem to get anything, I was lucky with Covid although I got it there was no affect and I only found out by a blood test, on top of that I have COPD (emphysema), GORD, osteoarthritis. Also because of so many tests they always seem to find other things like I have enlarged descending aorta and scans for that led to another enlarged aorta in the abdomen which means I am under two depts cardiac and vascular. I find my life now revolves around hospital probably like a lot of you, anyway that’s all I have. Good luck to everyone if I can help I will. Kevin
bad day: hi, today I had a migraine and... - Functional Neurol...
bad day

Hi Kev, sorry to hear you had a bad day with migranes. Another member knows a lot about these, so hopefully they can offer some practical advice. When my son suffered from headaches I was told about the Migrane Summit (held each year in March from recollection) where you can access a lot of interviews with specialists (think you could access 4 for free after registering and then for an annual fee to access everything past and present. My sons were tension headaches but I recall doing a lot of research and you will probably find a post if you scroll through them.
As for the tremors, what type are they?
I hope you continue to get support with your other conditions and that your migrane has gone away today.
Hi, thanks for advice. My tremors started in my right hand is intermittent but now seeing it in my left hand, it’s worse when holding items ( coffee or plates) the heavier the weight the less tremor. Was tested in neurology last year and they ruled out Parkinson’s was told it’s functional and probably part of my FND. My sleep neurologist saw my tremor and got me a datscan which I did last Thursday (5hrs) results in already insignificant findings no Parkinson’s. So the diagnosis is functional tremor (FND) . I have a brace on right hand for carpal tunnel and also need to wear a brace at night to keep arm straight at night because of cubital tunnel syndrome (all tested and diagnosed). Hopefully I won’t get any more labels (lol). Thanks for advice again.Kevin
Your welcome, although I don't think I helped much. This is what Julie (Re-Active said during a video and a question about fluctuating symptoms:
"Fluctuating or changing symptoms, sometimes we can figure that out, sometimes it had a clear sensory component or it had a clear motor control component or maybe there was a particular lifestyle piece that changed or maybe it was little pieces of all these that interact and particularly the interact in the brain to change symptoms and we don't always know.
Now I am going to tell you this is not different to MS, ALS and Parkinsons and we don't always know why and its frustrating as heck but not usual to neurological symptoms.
What is unique to FND is that the symptoms can be variable or move body parts."
Is the brace following an operation?
Did I hear right "the heavier the weight, the less the tremor"? This makes me think whether some type of regulation, sensory input might help.
Hi, the braces are to stop my hands clawing and the pins and needles before my hand goes numb, they are to keep the nerves free and not become trapped. My tremor was only in my right hand but over the past 2-3 months where I have used my left it started to tremor so now I have to carry plates or a mug of coffee in two hands otherwise it goes into overdrive. I think my problem is it is so intermittent I don’t know when it will happen, I just have to be vigilant.kevin
Makes sense but isn't there an op for carpal tunnel, not sure about other condition.
So the tremors were diagnosed as functional as intermittent, are there any tale tell signs you notice beforehand?
Plus although its not Parkinsons is there any advice on their official website for tremors other than holding things with two hands, any hand exercises etc.
No signs or triggers they can happen at anytime neurologist has put it down as part of my FND as my nerves are out of sink in various part of my body. Carpal tunnel can affect the whole hand or in my case thumb and two fingers as the nerves go through a tunnel in the wrist there is an op but I’m not bad enough yet. Cubital affects small and ring fingers as the nerve comes down the outside of the arm and get trapped going over the elbow there is an op for this as well but unless bad they do not recommend. Not been to the Parkinson’s web site.
Just saw your post. I have suffered from migraines for years. They started in my teen years. I had to go get shots in the past they were so bad. I now have a medicine that works after going to a clinic. I had headaches more often than you. I can get rid of them now and not take a whole day resting anymore. If you can get a doctor to prescribe sumatriptan then you take it with two over the counter Aleve. Those have to be taken together and see if it works for you. There is a combo medicine that has sumatriptan and Aleve in one pill but it was hard for me to get. . Also it is very strong medicine and I can only take it twice in a weeks time. I started getting them less frequently and now the that I have been diagnosed with FND they have been more frequent again. Last week I took my two doses within a few days for the first time in a long time. I always worry I will get another one before I can take my meds again but so far it hasn't happened.
