Hi there,
Maybe it's best to speak to your housing officer if your in a housing association.
My wife has FND and is incredibly sensitive to noise from above, despite adaptations soundproofing the ceiling.
We're in a lower ground apartment.
I'm now fighting the housing to try and get the medical team to move us into a Bungalow, but the age restriction is another hurdle too.
Maybe you need to have a medical assessment from your housing, if you're in a housing association property.
Very best of luck to you.
Best wishes.
Tony
Thanks very much for your reply sorry to hear that your wife is suffering aswell the housing were not interested when I told them I was sensitive to noise they said there is a housing crisis, I don't think they see being sensitive to noise as a disability, good luck with trying to get your bungalow .
Hi Greenbeens
If you ask your GP for a referral to audiology for an assessment for Hyperaccusis (noise sensitivity).
I have been given noise generator hearing aids which help to desensitise the brain, helps with tinnitus and helps with environmental noise issues becoming overwhelming.
I am also a medical cannabis patient and the oils and flower I have on private prescription helps with the pain response to noise and my Acquired Brain Injury, seizures and FND symptoms.
Hope this helps
In the mean time, noise cancelling headphones/or the gun shooting headphones from Walmart until you can do what the above person said.
what about a noise machine or moving where you have no one living above or next door…I can’t stand excessive noise either and the walking or kids above would drive me bonkers…
Hi Greenbeens .. I have the noise sensitivity problem too , first with music, then with all electronic sounds, but I have had enormous luck in finding an osteopath/researcher who deals in stimuli and their effect, and how to wear them down.. desensitisation. Now I can listen to music again ..the rest is work in progress. The therapy plan was to listen to music 3 times a day, every day, increasing the volume, tempo, length of listening time as I got more tolerant. I am following the same pattern now with telephone beeps.
You can find the sound of footsteps on youtube, and devise your own programme to suit your own tolerance level ..it takes a while but you can monitor your own progress, and the good thing is that YOU are in control of the footsteps ...that takes away some of the anxiety and you have a positive focus. I wish you happy and hopeful listening.
Loop Engage Plus works for helping my noise sensitivity. Hope that helps
Could you please explain what loop engage entails. Thanks
They go into your ear and decrease the decibel levels. When I first used them I went to a restaurant for the first time in a long time and I couldn’t hear people behind me but could hear my mom. It is worth checking out the website.
Thanks very much for the picture of the ear loops it will help me to find what I'm looking for I havn't heard of them before. Thanks
Hi rollover you replied to my post
Hi doglover you replied to my post about being hypersensitive to noise you suggested that I got loop engage earbuds I got them and there really good thanks for your advice as I was demented listening to the neighbour above me banging and stamping about on the ceiling.I do find them a wee bit uncomfortable but I will have to try to get used to them. The post above was a mistake I have very poor concentration. Thanks again for your advice.
I have the Loop Quiet ..which are not enough to reduce the scanner beeps to a tolerable level ( = nearly cancelled out) in the shops... do the loop engage plus manage to do this please?
How would that work if I'm trying to block out noise from my neighbour upstairs but still wanting to hear my tele, thanks for your reply.
Hi there are many things that cause me anxiety and stress and most I cannot do anything about, so I have trained myself to be more mindful, live more in the moment and basically - think-assess- and then mentally file away anything that is bothering me at least temporarily.
When you have no choice, the only option is to view the problem in a different way.
I suggest the these simple distraction meditations (I know sounds weird description):
First take a few deep breaths
Focus on 5 things in the room or place
Ground yourself by laying on the floor or placing your back against a wall
Think what is the worst thing that can happen? - Is it really going to happen? Really??
Remember nothing stays the same, change is part of the human condition.
Go for a walk, distance yourself from the stressful situation and let your mind refresh
Get plenty of rest even if you cannot sleep
Look into some free Apps on mindfulness and / or guided meditation you can access when you are particularly stressed out.
Find or do an absorbing hobby, even if it is just finding different routes to walk around the area or spot different things each day, bit like Eye Spy to take your mind of things.
Note: certain medications can make things worse, so check side effects with your GP if on medications.
Good luck,
Look for the calm in the Storm!
I could maybe think about the meditation I couldn't go for a walk I'm severely disabled with FND I stagger about all over the place I try to walk with crutches and even at that my arm and legs go up in the air and without the crutches I go round and round in circles like a dog chasing it's tail LOL my body also freezes when I try to walk as if i'm stuck to the floor. Thanks for your advice.
