Feeling Helpless, we’re is my life gone

Hi Guys l live in Glasgow and have applied to the council for help with maintaining my garden due to my severe FND.

They said no as my 63 year old wife should be able to do it.

I really need help as my garden is my oasis and because of my lack of mobility to not get very far.

My garden is my world but l can’t maintain it.

Anyone know how to get help as l can’t even weed or plant flowers as my beds are to low and l have now chance of cutting hedges shrubs trees and weed

It has put a lot of stress on me as it’s the only thing l can cling on to .

So l have a purpose in life as l have nothing else l can physically attempt.

Any advice would be appreciated

Mike 👍🙏🏻

Hi mike, I too love my garden, over the last 6 years I have had to get rid off most of my pots, gone down to two hanging baskets, thinned out a lot of flowers and plants on borders and put slate down to help combat weeds. I have a small garden and with my partner’s help it’s took 6 years to do this. Even in the summer just remembering to water things is a struggle, my dad bought me a knee stand with sides so I can kneel down and get back up using the side bars, brilliant idea and well worth having. Compared to what my garden was like 6 years ago it I’d rather plain now but for me it is mostly manageable now. All I can advice is go slow, very slow and if you can minimise what you have in your garden so it becomes manageable for you, hopefully it won’t take you as many years as it has me.

Sorry to hear that , have you thought of contacting a local Collage or perhaps even your local radio , bet there are loads of folk who would love to have the chance of a garden to be able to potter in , in return for a Cuppa & a biscuit & a new friend to share passion with . Another idea is Community projects locally? ask age concern ? There is help around > even local papers might fun a story about helping people like yourself.

I know if I am left on my own I would have to sell my house & boy do I love my garden . Some ideas for you , hope it helps.

I was thinking something similar to Vvalerie. A local charity maybe or how about garden centre? A primary school nearby? (You yourself would need checks for those obviously.) Maybe scouts/brownies or Duke of Edinburgh Award (contact secondary (High?) schools close to you). Somewhere to find trustworthy people who either love gardening and don’t have one of their own or who can’t get enough?!!

Hi Mike,

Occupational health or help the aged have a list of helpers who can assist at low cost, give them a try. I pay a groundsman to cut my grass once a fortnight.

As things slip from our grasp through ill health we try to hang onto what we treasure. Like you I love my garden but can no longer manage it due to a heart problem. 🌹🌷🌻

I was looking at my patio only yesterday wondering how I am going to get it cleaned in the spring. It depresses me to see it covered in algae - but remember the most important thing here is we are still breathing and have our eyesight to see these things.

I hope you find somebody to assist. 😘

Hi mike, have you tried contacting your local horticultural college as students may be able to use your garden as part of the volunteering section that I understand all students now have to do whilst on their course. Just an idea but it may help you xx

No but that’s another idea

Hi Mikey, If you were ever in the services some places do free gardening for veterans. Look them up in your area and find out. Miss Bently 😀
