Temperature related Symptom Inquiry

Hey all,

Has anyone had experiences with their temperature regulation getting messed up with FND? Below I wrote out what I'm experiencing. Just unsure if it's related to FND :/ I also have a thyroid condition (for over a decade), which I know affects temperature regulation, this seems very different.

I was given a diagnosis of conversion disorder (by a psychiatrist), somatoform disorder (GP), and FND (psychologist who works at a specialized somatoform clinic near me) about 2 years ago.

2.5 years ago I had my first really bad episode (inability walking, speaking, temporary paralysis, mutism- as a few). But something that start even before then was my temperature regulation got really messed up. I used to normally run on the cooler side. I recall most of this started about half a year before my first bad episode of FND.

I'd been reaching out for support from medical professionals about it since before my first bad episode of fnd. Got screened for diabetes and my thyroid levels were checked. Nothing came of it.

Symptoms

A) I'll be reading and sedentary and suddenly become too hot, sweating+flushed+dizzy. This can last half an hour to hours at a time. Sometimes when that happens it will swing from being that overheated to being really cold and shivering-back and forth over the next few hours.

B) excessive sweating. I used to not really notice my sweating that much, just happened when it was really hot out or I was exercising hard. I started having rolling sweat off my face, neck and torso from walking, light exercise, or sitting in the sun.

C) unilateral flushing. I notice it on my face. Mostly my cheek, nose, neck, sometimes forehead. It'll be deep pink, and hot to the touch. While the other side of my face (and rest of body to my knowledge) is unaffected. It happens to both my left and right side separately. Sometimes it is so intense that it feels like a bad sunburn and hurts.

Has anyone experienced any of these, or things similar? Just looking for support on what other people have done.

I have temperature regulation issues. I also get sweaty doing light activities, I had never had this issue until a year ago. I have been diagnosed for a little over two years. I also get extreme nerve pain in my hands and feet when they get cold and it doesn’t necessarily have to be that cold out for this to happen. I have been told by my neurologist that this is just part of FND but didn’t have any suggestions on how to treat it.

Hi Alaslizards I also have temperature issues but I have Raynaud’s disease since I was 3. I have also had Graves’ disease 2011. So both of these have an unfortunate impact on my FND. I can’t hardly ever get warm even though it could be hot outside. I have a hot water bottle rain or shine. I have tried beta blockers from GP but they messed with my heart so has to stop taking them. I feel in my own honest opinion it is hard to get support from most medical professionals I’ve seen as soon as they notice FND but a lot of people on here have had or do have great support. I am sorry I have not been much help but just know you are not alone. There are a lot of us with this dx and we all deal with things differently X Sending you a virtual hug and I hope you do find someone to help you 😊ps I am now in my 50’s😊

Hi Alaslizards, thanks for sharing your story. It is hard to pinpoint one particular cause for your temperature irregularity, because the body uses many systems to achieve optimal body temp. My trouble with temperature and sweating are mainly due to my high functioning anxiety, so I have come to establish some sort of pattern as to how it operates. I would have sweat just pouring from my scalp even if I'm doing light chores. One would think I'm training for a triathlon. If I can attribute it to any stressor or trigger, then I can find a way of dealing with it. What I have learned so far is that one has to become a detective to navigate through our many symptoms in order to find what works best for you. I hope that you can find some encouragement through my comments. Knowing now that someone else also encounters temperature issues, makes me feel okay about it. I'm not alone.

I would look into dysautonomia.

hi

I have problems with temperature control also. I got my FND diagnosis just recently but have been having problems with this for months now. My body is really hot to touch. I feel as if I’m having a rigor. My cheeks are flushed and my chin is really red and get a red rash down my neck and chest. Some days I feel really warm with it and other days I’m freezing. I’ve chatted to my GP but they do not seem to know what is going on. I’m wondering is this a symptom of FND ?
