My brother has find and is paralyzed down the right side. Can anyone give me advice as to how he can safely get out of bed without falling?

Hi Fran. If you are in the UK, I would suggest contacting your GP to get Occupational Therapist to come and assess your brother in his home. There are various aids available and they will provide whatever help they can. A "walker frame" is the safest solution for standing from a bed or chair. Always sit on the bed side first before trying to stand. If the bed is too low, it can be raised temporarily using bricks or wood blocks.
Can he walk ok once stood up? Have you read the two websites neurosymptoms.org and fndhope.org. Also you can join the Fndhope Facebook group that provides support and information with nearly 1400 members around the world. Click on the link on the Fndhope website Home page.
Hope this helps you.
Hi Fran, I am assuming that your brother lives alone? I think if it is possible he might need a caregiver several hours a day. Basically for getting out of bed, and possibly grooming and such. Depending on where you live he might qualify for assistance in this through an agency. In the US the Dr. should be able to help. Let us know if there is anything at all we can do, or if you just want to talk. God Bless, Cathy
Hi, a home visit from an occupational therapist is a good idea. They can help with bed rails, ( I have found one really useful for left sided paralysis), mattress raiser etc. Also some physios offer assistance with 'falling down' clinics, whereby you can be taught safer ways to mobilise if you are prone to falling. All the best.
