Morning .....sorry to hear this I know it must be worrying for you ! I also drag my left leg when it’s tired... just wondered if you have tried this ?
. Stand tall.... sway ie - transfer your weight from food to foot... slowly put weight into front of both feet then ....very slowly move one foot forward then walk with a wide stance.... this helps the balance ......
It’s my ‘go to’..... Kinda resets the brain and I set off with a smoother gait ( walk) .... anyway give it a go.
Also try distraction! Music whilst walking ... noticing the trees etc ..
Meanwhile, try to get a referral to one of the few FND specialist neurologists ASAP from your GP..... if they won’t refer you change your GP.... it’s a long wait to see one, so as soon as you can get referred the better. Where do you live?
Really not sure if your wrist is connected....but I started with sleeping in a stiff wrist splint with Velcro fastenings, get them from a chemist ... if it helps maybe be carpel tunnel syndrome....but could be many things.... the splint at night keeps it straight so it’s rests your wrist ...
I’ve tried standing tall but my foot won’t go straight enough for me to do that it automatically curves inwards I can’t stand tall either without leaning to one side I automatically when try to stand tall go down on my left side
I live in Edinburgh I’ve also tried looking around me and I’ve tried music when I’m walking nothing works also my dr is contacting a neurologist to see what they say
Hi, Dr Jon Stone is based in Edinburgh and is one of the top experts in FND. it was he who created the neurosymptoms.org website, so for you, he is definitely the man to see! But as Lucy says, there is often a long wait for an appointment. It's baffling to say the least when these symptoms come along, and you can't do the routine things like walking that you didn't have to think about before. So the stress of worrying seems to magnify it all too.
Best of luck to you, and I hope you get the help and answers to need soon.
My dr told me yesterday when I seen her she was going to call a neurologist for advice also my dr thinks it’s to do with stress but I don’t know, I’ve had this for 3 weeks my shoes are ruined they are all ripped down the left hand side by the toes I’ve got a appointment with my dr today at 4pm hopefully she’s spoken to the neurologist
Don't forget to check out other diagnoses, Fibromyalgia could answer most of these symptoms. It is pain and exhaustion (sometimes one limb will just stop due to the exhaustion and pain could cause your foot to twist) and is currently treatable - as in there are options that reduce the symptoms and allow you to manage the disease - this is not the case for FND. But Fibromyalgia is treated as a Rhumatology problem and you will either need a GP who is familiar with the disease or get a referral.
Unfortunately there are other diseases that cause pain and limb problems, the reason you might be looking at FND is that as each of these are relatively easy to rule out. All of us here have gone through months if not years of tests to rule out these conditions to be left as FND as the last resort.
Both conditions react to stress - stress isn't just 'I can't cope there is too much to do' it is a hormonal reaction that can cause ANY disease you have to get worse (even toothache will get worse!). Unfortunately anything made worse by stress will in turn increase your stress. Work out for yourself what stress relief techniques work for you, some people will swear by meditation, I love a three hour bath in the dark - there are whole bookshelves in the library/bookshop for you to look through and decide for yourself.
It sounds like fnd all the symptoms you have i have got its terrible this may be you could get referred to see a specialists so you can get a proper diagnosis
I’m seeing a neurologist I will get a letter out with a appointment date and time in the next few weeks I was out today and my leg just totally gave way on me and I fell down onto the ground
Some great advice give already so not much point in repeating it.
What I would suggest is that you either send some FND info to your GP then book an appointment to see them specifically. Or bring it with you. The general consensus is the average GP does not realise that the understanding of FND has moved on. Basically it's NOT ALL IN YOUR HEAD
May take a while to convince them but they should do a referral at your request.
They have done a neurology check on me from there point and referred me to see a neurologist I’m just waiting on a letter coming to say when my appointment is and time and who I’m seeing
Thats great but be prepared for a bit of a wait for any diagnosis. It is a long drawn out process. At least you know you are not on your own (doesn't make the delay any more accepable though)
