Causes of cancer.

I was originally told by my first doctor that smoking would have been the cause of my cancer,others were more inclined to consider the chemicals and paints i have used during my working life. As a professional gardener i have always steered away from using chemicals as natural products are better for the environment,my one exception was using glyphosate herbicide as i was told it was harmless. For years i have sprayed this stuff with no protection and even in bare feet. A current study in the USA has suggested that glyphosate is not as harmless as we were led to believe. I know its too late now but i still wonder if it could have caused my problems. I was also a spray painter for years and wore no protection there either (it was considered sissy and unnecessary). Does anyone else have any ideas on what may have caused their problem?

Yes Mark, I also was told smoking was the probable cause, but said it was more the toxins in the cigarettes, than the nicotine. I had smoked for 64 years up until then.

I was also told my smoking was the cause of my bladder cancer. They did ask had I worked with chemicals but I haven't. I'm still being told to stop smoking

I have no doubt smoking probably helped cause my problem,but my father was a smoker till he died at 73 from a stroke after surgery. Just not 100% convinced.

I still intend to give them up anyway as i know they arent good for me.

I would love to stop smoking but I don't know how. In the morning it's the first thing I do with my coffee. Mind you I have cut down from 20 a day to 11 or 12. I'm proud of that but how to stop altogether ?

I know how just havent managed it, cold turkey is the only way, i have tryed all the gums,patches and sprays. I am down to a dozen or so myself down from fourty or fifty.

I will keep at it, just have to pick the right stress free moment.

Wow you have done well to get down from 40 or 50 .Well done for that. I wonder if there will ever be a stress free time to stop. Bad enough dealing with illness without trying to stop smoking.

Retired doctor with T1, grade 3 bladder cancer. Now started BCG

For many years it's been recognised that dye workers had a high incidence of bladder cancer. Thought to be toluene, which might be in some paints and stains also. Don't know about glyphosate foliar herbicide. The USA food and drugs administration are Very fussy bout what they pass, not only on medicines, but everything handled by humans. They ban stuff that we pass here. Litigation fear of course. I believe they still use glyphosate, but can't find out for sure. If only one study condemns it, they'll dump it.

I've used Roundup for years, and last few, a cheaper glyphosate prep.

Smoking is the worst, alcohol has a part, and sedentary lifestyle and inadequate fluid intake are known. It's been called "Lorry drivers disease" Think of it, a lot of the poisons entering the body are eliminated via the kidney. If they are just lying in the bladder, in concentrated form, sets you up for it.

I also was told about smoking (2nd hand smoke). As a hospital pharmacist, I tend to think that it was some of the drugs I was exposed to. When I first started making intravenous drugs, we didn't have the information we have now and a lot of safety precautions used now weren't in use then.

I'm now on maintenance therapy with BCG and it's irritating me more and more. Yet, I would rather continue this then to go on to chemo.

I stopped smoking 30 years ago but for the last 20 worked with printing /inks/toners etc we would sometimes have to clean spilt toner etc up and would use water cloths and bare hands so I am on the chemical side as to my cause, also I know at least 4 people associated with printing chemicals who all have BC
