I was a happy bubbly SLIM woman until I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Now I'm finding I'm putting on weight. Can anyone help?

This could be caused by a couple of things...

Firstly have you been prescribed with any meds for fibro some of them do have the side effect of weight gain... Also / or because we have fibro we are so often in pain we do less active things because we can't and then gradually the weight creeps on. Even though we don't eat more we tend to exercise less... I wish I could help I know I don't eat more but I am very less mobile and on one medication that a side effect is weight gain, I,ve managed to limit it to a stone in extra weight but I seem to be stuck with it...and being short it is noticeable.... Lots of members have joined slimming classes or follow them online .

Please don't lose sight of the fact that you are a happy bubbly woman still inside yes you have fibro and a bit of extra weight but the essential you is still there and that's the thing to think positive about

I can't help mellie but i can emphaize with you. I have put on a good stone, maybe more. Im not sure if its down to the meds cos im definately not eating more,in fact i would say i actually eat less now, or possibly because i dont do the running about i used to. I know there is a few of us on a diet at the moment and seem to be doing well. Perhaps if you join them you can all give each other moral support. The best person to ask is Very-Grumpy, as i know she is on the diet. Good Luck! Charlii xx

I have put on 3 stone. I know some of it can be menopause (I am 60 this year) but I too was slim, and busy. I can't get out and exercise much, I am slow and have no energy. I gave up with diets, I just eat small meals and watch what I eat. I find dieting can have a negative effect. Its a lifestyle your after not a quick weight drop. I havent put on any more weight, but can't shift the lard that I have stored

I know the feeling and have been feeling that way myself too. I have gone from a size 10 to a 14 and some cases 16 in 2 years. I used to walk miles, even for charity. I have got off my backside and am looking into various ways to lose weight, that my carers can help me prepare.

Might wait for the pain management programme before I look into exercise as it looks like they are teaching manageable exercises for us.

Hi, I know that I have put weight on, I put it down to amitriptyline and certainly this winter not having been as active as I was due to increased levels of pain. The way I try to view it to stop myself going nuts (and even that's very questionable haha) is that you have to weigh up the benefits of the medications and what they are doing in a good way for you and are you repeated to go along with that.....I for one, despite hating the weight gain, don't think I would cope without the medication, so have to just try and get my befuddled head round being a size larger than I would like. Foggy x

Weight gain and fibro symptoms along with ME CFS can often be linked with undiagnosed

thyroid problems.

Thyroid U.K. is one of the charities on the Health unlocked web site. Go to the green bar at top of page and click on my communities and a drop down menu will show thyroid disease.

Underative (hypotjyroid) is a vastly under diagnosed illness, search it out, it may be you. :-)

I'm opposite I have lost weight cos I can't be bothered to cook or even eat if it's not there and I can just grab it with a cup of tea I don't eat I sleep so much so I'm losing weight..but it's prob lack of exercise making you put on weight and you may have a thyroid problem if had a underactive thyroid which is a big weight issue as you hav no metabolism..the two can be connected so get checked

hi there and hi everyone and the comments are true! VG was 1st to say as it is.

i was like you and since lyrica (pre-gabalin) which am one step from limit now and i have gained 2 stone and my eating habits have not really changed at all, i am the size i was when i gave birth lol

As for the excercising well thats just really out of question for me apart from flexing fingers and twisting my ankles around as they crack and click , stretching here and there as unable to many things.

its difficult as some can manage more than others just depends what you can do yourself and what you feel you can do.

They say walking is good excercise and TAi chi but i just read that word i dont perform it :-/

i was like you and probably lots of others on here i could do the splits and flip over backwards i was the party animal to my friends at 40 yrs old they were amazed how flexible and energetic i was and that to the kids i should be a dinosaur!! hoh how dare they hahaha

but now i am just a lovely little tortoise who plods around safely without trying to cause hazard to oneself for worry of breaking my shell.

i talk a lot of nonsense at times and could rite a book as i type so much.

ohh swimming too which also tried and tested but by gum hard work .

ps can VG turn on the cold tap for me too i am so over heated and burning :-( but still i will ;-) and smile telling you your doing a fab job hahahahah ..

Everyone on here are gems we all give our own experiences and help the best we can and we do try when up to it make light of things and have a little giggle here and there.

lots of hugs and just go with the flow and speak to your Dr as if you are worried that is what they there for no matter how many times you go and give them a nudge and say 'hey am in need of some TLC today what can you do for me xxxx

It's properly down to you being less active due to your pains etc.. or it could be down to your lack of energy levels which change your maral and cause you to retain water, the most obvious of them all could be that you have an underactive thyroid glad, this can be checked through a blood test. If you take medication check the side effects, doom can be weight gain x

My personal experience has been that the inability to exercise, combined with comfort eating, plus the undoubted effect of some medications, can turn you into a flabby. demoralised lump.

You have to be extra specially careful that what you eat is tasty, nutritious and not too high in calories. I use the Slimming World plan, but I believe Weight Watchers is good too - whichever you please.

I don't go to meetings, they're too expensive and a bit 'Marjorie Dawes' - I just buy the magazine and use the instructions and recipes - it works for me!

Exercise is essential, but it has to be little and often - a major session will put you back weeks. I do stretches when I wake up, some more after a hot shower, and I try to walk for ten minutes twice a day.

Sometimes I can walk a lot more than that, but I take it cautiously.

Everyone manages their illness differently, so do what suits you, but you must do something, or you won't improve. Doctors are good at giving out medicines, but they don't offer much in the way of comfort or life-style advice, so we all have to be our own best friends and work out a way of coping.

Maybe we'll get a cure - come the revolution!

Hi guys. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions, I have an underactive thyroid- I was diagnosed during my last pregnancy 10 years ago. I'm having a not too bad day today, been for an amble and managed to clean the fish tank (with a little help!) I have put on 2 and a half stone in about 10 months so nothing fits me anymore but as you say at least the pain has lessened slightly (for today anyway- who knows what tomorrow will bring?!) I am new to this site but I already love reading the comments and help. Thank you everyone. XXXXXXX

I am very less mobile too and put on Weight 10 KG
