Fibromyalgia drugs and breastfeeding

Hi I’ve recently just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and I’m breastfeeding my 8 month old son. Ive been to my gp today as my muscle pain is worsening leading to me not being able to walk very far. I have 2 young children (2 and 8 months) therefore I need to get the pain under control but he won’t prescribe me anything due to me breastfeeding. He initially wanted to prescribe me Duloxetine but it states cannot be taken whilst breastfeeding but on the nhs uk website it says it can be taken as only small amounts pass through milk, I have informed my gp of this but he still won’t prescribe me it. Is anyone else breastfeeding and on any medication or does anyone have any advice for me? I’m new to all this and trying to get this under control ASAP thanks

There is no medication that really controls the pains of fibro, certainly not long term. Some things help some people, masking the pain, helping with sleep etc. but it's no fix.

I can't stress enough how important learning to use your muscles correctly is. I was in pain since I was a small child, but I learned to heal by focusing on the main muscles of movement

Starting with your Base-Line:

Base pelvic floor muscles, the strong foundation for movement. Kegel exercises focus on the pelvic floor and are a good way to start.

Then your central Line - the rectus abdominis muscles from pelvic symphysis, up the front of your abdomen to your ribs.

These muscles are our core pillar of strength, think "stronger and longer with every in breath".

Start to connect with these muscles. Practice the roll-down action.

There's more detail in my other posts - click on my profile.

It worked for me (it took a long time to release all the pain) so the sooner you start the sooner things might be under control.

Good luck, it can't be easy with 2 young kids to care for too.

Hi Nat, sorry to hear about your diagnosis, it must be so difficult for you with such young children. May I applaud you for wanting to continue with the breast feeding, well done you.

Could you make an appointment with a different doctor at your medical practice, to ask for their opinion on different treatment options? Do you have family or friends nearby who you can ask for some help with looking after the children so you can get more time to give yourself a break or a rest?

Could you speak to a pharmacist at your chemist shop for their advice regarding taking medications when you are breastfeeding? They are usually very helpful.

Are you able to take any over the counter painkillers (paracetamol) when breastfeeding?

Take care xx

Just another thought, who was it who diagnosed you? Was it your GP or a rheumatologist? If it was a consultant, can you contact them to ask what they suggest would be appropriate medication?

Thankyou for your reply. I’m going to get an appointment with another dr and ask for their opinion. Yes can take paracetamol which I do take would just like something else to help control the pain so can live a normal life like I used to. It was also my gp that diagnosed me xx
