Has no-one been put on steroids for fibromyalgia?  I had two bouts of polymyalgia and was over-dosed on steroids and am now 71 and without any strength and my writing, which was beautiful, has gone to pot.

Hi Elizabeth,

It is not normal practice to be prescribed Steroids for Fibro, although sometimes Specialists prescribe it if they suspect other conditions may be causing the symptoms  of Fibro.

The use of Steroids have to be carefully monitored by your Dr and you have to strictly adhere to the dose prescribed as they can give you some very serious side effects, but if used correctly they can turn around very quickly some nasty illnesses.

I am not a Dr and I speak purely from my experience, and others.

Two of my relatives have polymyalgia and have symptoms relieved by steroids.  I have  periodic doses of steroids for one of my other conditions but they have no effect on my fibro.

Yes GP and Panda60, my experience bears out what you say. I know several friends with polymyalgia and when I got my symptoms I was sure that I'd got the same, as they were so similar to what my friends described. I went to my doctor and he explained that Poly can be confirmed by a blood test, so he did one. It came back negative for Poly and he said "I'm afraid we're probably looking at Fibromyalgia, there isn't a cure, so all we can do is manage the situation." I have been on amitriptyline since 2010 to help me get proper deep sleep and am coping reasonably well.

As the others have said, it is not standard practice to prescribe steroids for Fibro. I have been taking a maintenance dose of 10mg of Prednisolone for about 2 years due to having chronic asthma and COPD. I want to genuinely and sincerely wish you all the best of luck.
