IVF - 6/7 week concerns.

Sorry it’s a long one just trying to give as much info as possible -

We went for our 7 week viability scan at our ivf clinic where they were very concerned to find no heartbeat. We didn’t have any dates or measurements mentioned to us and very little explained and we’re rushed out the door and advised to go straight to our local hospital, which of course we did.

When we got to the hospital our experience being scanned and advice given by the staff there, seemed to be be very different.

the sonographer explained the baby was in a really difficult position and spent 20 minutes scanning us in different posistions before bringing a second member of staff in for a secondary opinion.

Baby was measuring 6 weeks not 7. Fetal pole was there, sac was there, as was embryo, however embryo seemed to be right at the edge of the sack positioned very difficulty inside me and they were really struggling to detect a heartbeat. So basically everything other than heartbeat was present and as it should be and ohh baby measuring a week behind, due to ivf we are certain they should be 7 weeks not 6.

We’ve been advised to come back next Sunday in 9 days time for another scan to see if the pregnancy has progressed and hopefully baby has grew therefore we can get a clearer image. The member of staff was very positive and reassured us they scan lots of people at 6 weeks and have to advise them to return as the baby is too small to detect a heartbeat but that she was happy with everything else she seen and we need to go home and relax.

As you can imagine baby being a week behind and not definite confirmation of a heartbeat due to baby being behind has us crazy beyond frantic •. Does anyone have any advice or has anyone been through anything similar?

(Thanks for reading)

it sounds like it is difficult for them to get an accurate measurement or see a heartbeat due to the location and position. so it is really hard to say if they’ve maybe measured it slightly out as a mm can make such. Difference at this stage!

Being a week off isn’t usually a concern for them at this stage in a natural pregnancy but like you said due to the IVF we know exactly the dates so for me that wasn’t good news being a week behind, even when we finally got a heartbeat the following week, but having trawled the internet during a similar experience I did find stories where it was a positive outcome. Got my fingers and toes crossed for you for your return scan, I know it’s the longest wait in the world xx 💜🤞🏽

Thank you so much for your supportive message I can’t thank you enough. 5 days to go, the wait is agonising. It feels so cruel what we have to go through when some people have no issues at all fertility wise it feels so devastating at times and such a hard brutal journey for some of us.

I will update you in due course whether it be good or bad. Thanks again x

Hi Panda, so sorry about how much stress you’re under! I haven’t got any advice I’m afraid, but just wanted to say I’m also in a similar position and know how you’re feeling.

My 7 week viability scan is on the 23rd, but as I’ve been feeling so anxious I went for a private scan at 6+2 to help calm my nerves, however it had the opposite effect as I was measuring 5+4 so too early to see baby, being ivf as well my dates should also be exact, so I’m either 5 days behind or baby’s stopped growing. The wait to the next scan is just awful. From endless googling there seems to be mixed outcomes, but I’m keeping everything crossed for us both ❤️
