Neither of the 2 eggs have developed any further. The lab is going to ring us again Wednesday to let us know if there's any change, but its not very likely. Absolutely devastated.
Hiya, first IVF cycle and just had egg collection yesterday, we were thrilled to hear we had 15 eggs. But had a call from the lab this morning that only 2 have fertilised. Why have we lost so many?😔Has anyone else been in a similar situation? And have success stories??

Do you know what proportion of the eggs were mature? Only mature ones will be able to fertilise. Also did they comment on the sperm quality? ICSI is often used in future cycles for people who need another go at it where issues like this have occurred. Will keep my fingers crossed for your two embryos xx
No, they didn't tell us, the phone call was so quick and we were so shocked we didn't ask. We are using donor sperm, so I guess it would have to be good quality to be able to be used. Thank you!!
I'm so sorry to hear that. I have had this happen before and it's really upsetting and frustrating. But there are definitely things to do differently so onwards and upwards and lots of luck for your next round x
ah I see! Make sure to ask how many of the 15 eggs were mature because only those have the potential of being fertilised. So although 15 were collected, perhaps only 10 were mature. Then it’s down to egg and sperm quality. I can see you’ve used donor sperm so not sure if they give you the semen parameters. Egg quality declines with age (not sure how old you are).
OK, I will, thank you. Its my partner who is having the treatment she's just turned 39. I'm wondering if they made us stim for a day too long. We had one dose of gonal f left and had to buy one more gonal f 300. We had a graph given to us of the follicles sizes on the last scan 2 days before collection and we had 10 over 20mm with 3 being 25mm is that too big to have a mature egg? The majority of the follicles were 16mm 2 days before that scan
having follicles over 20mm should be fine but I’d ask about the ones which were 25mm as it sounds too big (but I’m no expert of course). My clinic aims for at least 2-3 follicles that are over 17mm before trigger so I’d check with your clinic re their parameters. IVF is unfortunately trial and error. I felt my clinic triggered me a day or two early but there’s no way of knowing what the outcome would’ve been otherwise.
Egg quality begins to decline over the age of 35 so a drop off is expected when it comes to fertilisation. Hope your clinic can offer you some answers xx
ok you have every right to question everything. Ask them how many eggs were mature? If you’re able to, ask about sperm quality and why they think only 2 fertilised and then nothing. Sorry to hear this xx
I have had 2 egg collections. The first one were 10 eggs collected, 7 fertilised, 2 made it to day 5. Second was 12 eggs collected, 6 fertilised, 2 made it to day 5There is always a fair amount lost throughout the process...but if your 2 fertilised ones make it to day 5, that's all you need! Good luck!
I had 14 eggs retrieved and were told after egg collection that 13 eggs were mature. The next day we got the call to say only 3 were fertilised and one of those was unlikely to make it (it didn’t make it). I was devastated to have such a good egg retrieval but massive drop off.
We ended up having a day 3 transfer with 2 embryos (an eight cell and a 4 cell). It worked and we currently have a 16 week old baby!
So there can be success stories x wishing you all the best on your journey x
I had no eggs fertilised recently after collection. Same as you, was so shocked that we didn’t ask many questions during that first call. Because we had zero, there was no transfer. On a follow up appointment, we were told although the sperm was healthy and eggs looked mature with no major issues but they look to have a tougher exterior which the sperm struggled to get past. They said it can happen albeit not very common, but they didn’t seem too worried as I’ve conceived through natural IUI before (although it unfortunately ended in a miscarriage). We’re going down the ICSI route next time to try and bypass this issue.
Like others have said, it’s common to not have all fertilised. But the good news is you have had two fertilised and it only takes one! Just take each day as it comes. Don’t worry if you don’t think of questions to ask right away. Just take some time to reflect and jot down anything that comes into your head and either mention it on the next call/appointment you have or give them a call directly to go through it. They really won’t mind the questions at all.
we had 18 eggs collected, 9 day 3 blastocysts which became 3 day 5 blatoscysts who h we froze. We did x2 FET, one stuck but sadly I miscarried at 10weeks. Went on to be diagnosed with Endo and they adjusted the protocol and did transfer of our final one and now have a beauty of 12week old daughter..so keep positive. ✨
Lots of good suggestions above. Make sure to ask lots of questions for future insight. Two fertilised gives you hope for this round too though, one or both could make day 3. Day 3 transfer is used if they are happy to transfer two or one is clearly the stronger looking by then. I only had two fertilised and they actually waited until day 5 in the end up, one transferred and one frozen day 6. Good luck 🤞 xx
Hi Lauren, yes this happened to me and I only had 1 egg fertilised, transfered on day 3 and I’m now ‘nearly 11 weeks. See below from my old post. I kind of lost so many because of the lack of technology at my NHS clinic but I guess I can’t blame anyone
Background
First round 4 eggs collected, all mature, no fertilisation with conventional IVF.
Current round
Currently in the TWW on my second round of IVF this time with ICSI. Was told 11 follicles collected, 8 immature (couldn’t use), 2 (showed signs of maturity on day 2 so they injected that day).
1 (successfully fertilised and showed normal signs of cell division) so that was booked for a transfer on day 3 . Currently 5dp3dt.
None frozen
The 2 injected on day 2 didn’t survive but on the day of transfer the embryologist told me that 6 of the 8 they said were immature are now showing signs of fertilisation (called it late fertilisation). They called two days later and said all 6 made it to blastocysts (with 2 even hatching, which is uncommon and a surprise to them). Unfortunately my clinic doesn’t do PGT testing and they missed fertilisation due to not using a time-lapse incubator, so I cannot use or freeze any of these embryos! However they feel hopeful for the one they transferred as it was good quality.
