fresh vs frozen transfer

Hi everyone. Just wondering which you have had more success with?

A bit of back ground, I have endo and my last fresh transfer failed.

I have the option to freeze all or transfer the best (providing we actually make it to day 5! Egg collection was today)

The reason we have this option is due to the pain and discomfort I experience with a speculum and the fact my body tries to expel it. As there is no anaesthetist avail this Saturday they’ve said I can either attempt to go ahead (with tramadol) or freeze all.

I guess it does depend on how many (if any) blasts we get. Just can’t decide what to do 😵‍💫😵‍💫 any advice is much appreciated. Thanks all xxxx

thank yob TopGuntastic - it’s the worst wait isn’t it 🥹 and I have anxiety around it following our previous round. When will your transfer be? Wishing you all the best 🤍 xx

Thinking of you this week ♥️ hope you are feeling ok post egg collection. I don't think there's necessarily a right or wrong answer, the success rates tend to be the same I believe. Lots of people do well with frozen cycles as it gives the body a chance to recover. So I guess it depends how comfortable you feel trying a transfer with tramadol? Xxx

thank you so much. It went well in terms of numbers, but I’ve had bleeding this time and it’s so painful. Doctor also told me my ovaries were touching - which I didn’t have before so I’m a bit confused 😵‍💫 maybe it was because they were so swollen as opposed to being stuck together from my endo. Last surgeon said they moved pretty freely and seemed fine. Anyway, will just had to wait and see.

Thank you, I am going to try with tramadol, just worried if we have one good blast I ruin it by a stressful uncomfortable transfer!

Hope you’re doing ok? Xxx

Oh that's great news re numbers - fingers crossed 🤞 your ovaries are probably swollen from the stims so will take a little while to settle down. I know plenty of women here who've gotten a bfp after traumatic transfers so please don't worry about that! I'm ok thanks, gearing up for the next FET 🤞 xx

Hmm… in my first cycle I had a fresh transfer with a BB and a BC and at least one of them stuck (temporarily), but we had nothing else to freeze (2 x 4CC). Second time I had a 4AA fresh and everyone at the clinic was sooo optimistic about it working but I just *knew* it wasn’t going to cos I still felt all swollen on day 5 (which hadn’t happened the first time) and it just didn’t feel like my body was going to be receptive to anything. We froze a 4AB and a 4BB on that cycle, and I kind of wished I’d used the 4BB for the fresh transfer (or even said on the day that I didn’t want anything fresh - I was maybe being a bit too British about it, and hadn’t strategised because I didn’t think I’d have anything to freeze!) - I felt like I was wasting an embryo by having it transferred fresh that time. I have to say too that I was in a much better frame of mind when I knew I had a couple in the freezer. Nothing to freeze on first cycle was a bit of a shock given numbers up to that point.

I know that some clinics really push for frozen over fresh. Mine seem to have fresh as the default. My clinic won’t freeze grade C blasts, so based on the fact I thought that FET might work better for me (once I knew I was capable of actually getting blasts to freeze), we decided that our strategy the next time would be a sort of freeze all with a caveat: we’d freeze anything that could be frozen on day 5, and if there was one blast (or two) that couldn’t be frozen, we’d transfer that fresh so as to avoid having it discarded by the clinic. It means you won’t know you’re having a transfer until the day, but my clinic was flexible enough to accommodate that so might be worth discussing with yours ☺️ xx

hey Piggy, thank you so much ! This is my exact worry, risking the highest grade with a fresh transfer and having nothing to freeze.

My clinic says I can freeze all, but if I do have a fresh transfer they’d prefer to transfer the highest quality embryo. Which means if any aren’t suitable to be frozen, they’ll be discarded.

I think I will wait to see how many fertilise and how many last til blast and go from there. Glad you have some safely in the bank 🤍 xx

By “prefer” does that mean they *won’t* transfer the lower grades fresh? ;) I get that the NHS kind of have to go with the option that will give the best outcome on the first transfer, but plenty of C grades make babies and it seems such a shame to waste anything. Hopefully you’ll get only Bs and above and your decision will be nice and clean 😊 xx

Don’t panic. You had a fertilisation result before, so you know it’s possible. You’ve just got to find what works. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 xx

I’m worried it’s my endo and I’ll need to have a laparoscopy as that’s what’s stopping them from maturing. I don’t know. I guess we just wait now. I feel horrendous x

You’re in good hands, and whatever you need will be worth it. It’s natural to feel sh1tty, especially when it all starts well. Just do whatever you need to do to get through the next few days and you will feel better and then you can hatch your next plan. Xx

Hi there, just scrolling through some posts and read your reply. My NHS clinic will not freeze any c graded embryos either...gutted....we are self-funding. You have given me an idea....do fresh transfer of those that are "not freezable" then freeze the others that make it to blast. So thank you. I started my cycle yesterday and currently on menopur and gonal-f xx

For me my 2 frozen cycles have been successful ( i have 2.5 year old and currently pregnant) my fresh cycles haven't been successful. Frozen is less stressful on your body, if it can survive being frozen and then thawed it is showing it is a tough cookie already. Obviously no gaurantee but i think try frozen if your fresh hasn't worked and your body has been in pain! All the best of luck.
