Transer 1 or 2 Frozen embryo?

Hi All,

I’m on my first NHS IVF cycle. unexplained infertility and 33yo. Partner sperm analysis good and no known medical problems with me. From my first retrieval we have 3 day 5 blastocyst all of good grades. I had 1 fresh embryo transfer resulting in a BFN and today I’ve had my follow up consultation and prep for next steps - FET.

I’ve been asked if I want 1 or 2 embryo transferred on my next cycle and I honestly don’t know how to decide. I know there may be chances of multiples which we don’t mind and I know there’s other risks, but apart from those risks, will it make any difference if we do transfer 2. I’m just worried that if two is transferred and fails for whatever reasons, Ive lost another chance on a FET.

Would like to hear others experiences and advice :)

My clinic is also NHS and they told me under NHS they rarely transfer 2 embryos unless you had recurring failure or miscarriages. They did tell me about recent studies where transferring 2, both embryos need to be similar grades or they will be counteractive (if one goes down, the other will as well) so it is up to the embryologist to decide, on the day of thawing if you opt for 2 and your 2 embies left are in the same quality group. I had 2 BFN so this time round I opted for 2, they were very reluctant and said they prefer 1 but it is up to me, I still opted for 2. Personally I think i'll have more chance, taking all above conditions in consideration but on the day of transfer if all goes as plan I want to give myself and my embies a chance.

I have did lots of single and a few double transfers. I think it depends on the situation really and mostly mine were quality of the embryos or time factors considerations. I think personally at your age with no known issues I would take them one at a time to see if they work, especially as it’s your first ever FET you might learn something the first time to tweak the second time. Just my personal thinking though and there really is no right or wrong answer! It was a single embryo FET that ended up working for us but it really is a game of chance sometimes 🤗 wishing you lots of luck! Xx

Hi JB124 ,

I was in the same situation as you but with a fresh cycle .I had my first CISI cycle back in October . I had 12 eggs retrieved , 9 fertilised and 2 made it to 5 day blastocysts both A grades. My clinic advised me to tranfer 2 and I did . I am now 14 weeks pregnant with one 🙂I thought more of a chance really twins would have been great also …. wishing you luck x
