Consultant pushing PGTA

Morning everyone!.. My wife and I are working with two different fertility clinics. We’ve had two failed FET with her embryos (chemicals, embryos graded day 5 4BB, 4BC and day six 4BC)). Now she’s heading into round two. The consultant said that as three embryos have not resulted in a baby she is likely producing a higher number of abnormal embryos. He said she might have an egg competency problem so he wants to do PGTA to find out.

we spoke to the genetic counsellor who didn’t feel it was particularly indicated (age A6)

However he was banging on about it again when we called last week. Is anyone else’s Consultant so pro PGTA? I don’t think it’s that unusual to have a failed round of treatment..

Xx

Hi, Our consultant and the main clinic lead was pretty for it this time for us and pushing me hard on stims. we’ve had 2 rounds, first round BFN, chemical then our little boy, BFN, BFN 2nd round BFN, BFN. Total of 9 day 5 embryos with one success. With 5 not worked since we had our son.

I get where they are coming from if you have 3 failed transfers in a row that seems to be the trigger point in my clinic to say ‘what about testing’ but after careful consideration we’ve decided not to do the testing and they are fine with that too, although they still said they are a ‘big fan’ of it as it helps narrow things down and saves time on transferring embryos that were never to be but it has to be something you are comfortable with xx

Ah thanks Twiglet2 it’s helpful to know what things have been like for you. I’m not sure how much your clinic charge but ours charges a set fee of £3150, even if you only have one or two embryos. Yeah it’s such a personal decision and probably one of the most difficult ones to make xx

hi there. Do you know why they’re pushing it so much? I’ve just done it because I’ve had 5 transfers, 2 BFPs resulting in miscarriage. I’m slightly older, 39, but I pushed for it to try to prevent another miscarriage. I would recommend it for this reason. I had 6 collected, 3 were abnormal, 1 normal and 2 mosaic. I’ve not transferred any yet, but you can see how high the odds are for abnormal. I’m some other countries, they automatically do it but there is evidence that it doesn’t actually increase the chances, and costs a fortune! The extra cost for me was £1250 plus £330 per embryo tested, so ended up costing an extra £3000. Good luck anyway!

I have done 5 cycles, had 6 transfers of 8 embryos so my consultant is recommending testing and I’m happy with that as we’ve been through so much. I feel for me it will give answers if we need to move to donor eggs or not. I’m 38. Xx

hi there, I’m much older at 42yrs and I feel the PGTA is a really good thing to do as I’ve just completed 1 cycle and we only paid £500 for PGTA (not sure why your quote is so expensive! But that was for 1 embryo) but the testing showed the embryo was aneuploid so not viable for transfer. I’ve had 2 miscarriages and I’m sure now both were due to chromosomes so this testing saved me more heartache. If your partner is producing eggs but something isn’t working with FET it is worth testing so u don’t go through all the heartache of miscarriage and disappointment. But If it’s too expensive and your partner is only 36 then the then the clinic will respect your decision and u just go for the next one which could also work out fine.

I’d suggest to discuss improving egg quality with supplements etc If u don’t go or can’t afford PGTA as that would be much cheaper!

In one way they want to give u the best chance of success but if you feel you are already doing the right things, she’s healthy etc then I think it’s a decision that u can both make. Wishing u lots of Good luck xx
