I have not been sleeping well as I have my egg collection at 8.30am tomorrow.
Please tell me I have nothing to worry about and it won’t feel too painful?! I’m apprehensive about the conscious sedation part, too, but feel so bloated that it feels like it’s time 🙈

Hi lovely. I totally understand that it’s nerve wracking but my experience has been that egg collection is absolutely fine. I didn’t remember anything from the actual procedure despite the fact they said it was conscious sedation, and the recovery was quick - just v minor soreness and a bit of bloating. The only thing I found unpleasant was the wooziness after sedation, but that only lasted a few hours.
Thank you so much for your reply. I have been home and felt the same as you - minor soreness but just feels uncomfortable more than anything else! Reading this thread of replies really helped calm my nerves whilst waiting to go to the procedure room - thank you. It was all fine in the end! 💕
Your off in now I suspect and you will be nervous but it will all be fine.
I had my 2nd egg retrieval on Friday. Both have been absolutely fine, the first one I remember sitting down confirming who I was and after they put the drugs into my arm I was gone (it didn’t feel that was I was talking and the next thing I know I’m in the recovery room! It’s bizarre but great as it means (for me at least) both times I wasn’t concious during it all I just woke up after it was all done.
Gobbled down some tea and toast and snoozed for an hour whilst the various dr’s came and spoke to my wife and I about results.
I found myself able to chat away freely almost as soon as I woke up however many feel wobbly and silly for want of a better word. All normal.
You got this! And soon you will be home relaxing eating some of your fave foods and drinking plenty of water x
thank you so much for talking me through your experience! Yours helped me to feel as though it could be manageable! I didn’t fall asleep but I could feel things happen but didn’t really care - if that makes sense?! I felt really elated actually 😂
Thank you for your positive words of support and encouragement - helped me to focus on leaving and going home afterwards 😊
what an amazing result! Strange isn’t it how all clinics must have a different cocktail in their sedation, meaning some experience the procedure and others don’t.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thinking about you and those strong 12 eggs this week 🤞 🙌
Hi RosePetals with conscious sedation you won't be wide awake for the procedure you will most likely be in a light sleep. In conscious sedation you are alseep but your brain is still active and you can dream whereas full sedation you are completely knocked out and your brain is switched off so try not to panic you won't feel anything. I have had 3 egg collections with conscious sedation I felt nothing and don't remember the procedures at all but I did have strange vivid dreams each time the last collection I dreamt I was in walkinground a zoo that had all these extinct animals. Good luck tomorrow
thank you for your reply - I certainly was panicking! I think I was more worried about the vulnerability of just suddenly being asleep! I actually remained awake but didn’t really feel bothered by anything like pain etc. so unfortunately I didn’t have any fun dreams haha. Thank you for your words of support.
hey, I was so so worried about the egg collection as I had conscious sedation and I was so scared I would be in pain but I don’t remember a thing! I remember laying down on the table and then the sedation hit and then I was waking up on the ward. I don’t remember any of it and I wasn’t sore afterwards. The lovely nurses gave me some tea and a biscuit and then I was good to go home. Honestly the worst part was getting the cannula in my hand 😂 xx
Thank you for sharing your experience!! It helped me keep thinking - I’ve done the cannula and that is the tricky bit! I actually stayed awake and was being taught about the procedure which really helped. I also had tea and biscuits and some lovely nurses in recovery 😊
Hoping all went well and you will soon be back home. Take it easy for a day or two - sure the nurses will give you all the information about what to expect etc.
Take care of yourself and good luck for the future
Thank you for your reply! It did all go well, thank you. I’ve been at home with my gel and antibiotics but not really in any pain. I really appreciated your positive and supportive words. Thank you.
You’ll be fine! Others experiences sound very different from mine if im honest. I remember everything, conscious sedation, could feel woozy (like I was drunk!) but remember all conversations, watching the screen, thanking them, laughing, didn’t feel a thing just a bit of pressure. The worst part for me was the cannula part, they couldn’t get it in lol! Best of luck lovely! My second is on Thursday so we’ll be similar timing! X
how you have described your experience was exactly like mine! I felt really elated and didn’t worry about anything. I agree - the worst part was the cannula for me too! My right arm was not playing ball so I had a second attempt on my left arm which worked haha.
Good luck for your egg collection today! Hope all goes well and you will soon be back in the recovery room with refreshments 😊 you’ve got this!
I actually quite like the sedation part of the treatment, maybe I am odd... but it's a nice little sleep and you get well taken care of. I had a dream about being on a train when I was in for collection last week. Good luck you will honestly be 👍
thank you for your reply - the sedation made me feel elated and I enjoyed it too 🤣 they played Beyoncé, laughed and chatted with me and I didn’t even care about anything I was feeling. Thank you for your well wishes - it was all okay!
When I had my egg retrieval I literally was asleep even though they said it was just a sedation. I was asleep for 40 mins and woke up to some biscuits, a cup of tea and a smiley nurse. You'll be absolutely fine. Good luck for your retrieval xxx
thank you for sharing your experience! I didn’t fall asleep but I came back to the recovery area with tea and biscuits and a lovely team of nurses, too. Thank you for your reply - it really helped reading through everyone’s experiences of it !
Completely understand the nerves, especially if its the first time you are being sedated. I have now had two egg collections and they felt like a breeze (particularly when i compare to some of the other procedures i have had during IVF). You don't feel a thing during the procedure. Afterwards, when you come around, you feel abit groggy, but nothing too unpleasant. They give you tea and biscuits, and once you feel ok, you are free to leave. I didnt feel any real discomfort after the egg collection. Just slight fullness around the abdomen. The main unpleasant symptom was constipation (progesterone plus sedation can slow your digestive system down).
hi, thank you for your reply! Yes it was my first time with sedation and I think I just was panicking about how l would feel with it!
Thank you for sharing your experience - mine has felt very similar to what you described! I feel quite full actually and uncomfortable but it’s manageable. Wow - I hope your journey is going okay?
HI? so how did it go? I had 2 egg collections. First one was for IVF mini - they collected 2 eggs and they didn't give me anything. It didn't go well as I was in so much pain when they tried to poke with the needle that my body was not letting them do the procedure. I was crying. If my legs were not strapped in, I would have ran away I think. For the second IVF mini I told them I wanted the sedation otherwise no way I could do it. I was nervous but the moment they hit me with the drug I was chilling and smiling through the whole thing. Didn't remember a thing and in my head it lasted like a second even though it was 15 minutes. The things we go through ...
Oh goodness I’m sorry to hear your first attempt was so difficult but your second sounds very similar to mine! Yes I think I was smiling and I was laughing away with the team and it was all actually okay! The recovery room and tea and biscuits after felt very comforting. Definitely the hardest part is the actually cannula! Good luck with your journey.
Firstly I just want to say thank you to all of you. Your kind words and support were something I kept re-reading through whilst I was waiting to go into the procedure room.
Unfortunately the first cannula attempt was unsuccessful but it was changed to a smaller one for my other arm and that worked well! I waited for about an hour as there were two ladies before me, and then was taken to the procedure room. The team were fantastic! I said I was nervous so they asked who’s music I liked to listened to (I said Beyoncé!) they then played her music throughout the whole thing. Sedation was okay - made me feel very emotional and happy! I didn’t actually realise it was even being put in to the cannula as I was being inserted into at the same time and was thinking about that. I could feel bits but I felt like I wasn’t bothered by it and it wasnt painful - if that makes sense?! There was a student observing in the room so the doctor was talking through each step and showing it to me on the display. This actually really helped calm me and gave me knowledge and understanding at each stage. It lasted about twenty minutes on total.
I left the recovery room and had my obs checked. The nurses were fab and gave me biscuits and tea! They then told me 12 eggs had been collected!!! 😀 I was given Doxycycline antibiotics to take away with me and told that I could leave after I had passed urine. This all went fine and I left shortly after. Only mild discomfort but it’s not really painful just that I’m aware that something happened 😂
