OHSS - feeling very sick; any advice?

So it’s day five after my egg collection and I feel so sick. Bloated. Occasional vomiting. Can’t eat much. Some small cramps and nausea. I am totally exhausted and pass out in the afternoon because my body feels so heavy. I am already on cabergoline medication (maybe that’s an effect of this medication?)

Any recommendations? Does this start to get better when you have a period?

Thank you xx

I’m really sorry, OHSS sucks. So: drink a LOT - more thank you want to, ideally 3-4 litres a day. Counterintuitive, but it helps. Try and alternate water with full fat milk and drinks high in electrolytes like coconut water / lúcozade . Eat protein (chicken, eggs, skyr yoghurt).

If you’re constipated, which often happens and makes it worse, don’t fear prunes, chia seeds and láctulose as you need it.

And lots of rest.

And yes, you should feel better when you start your period.

If you feel worse call a doctor, OHSS can (rarely!) get pretty nasty.

Hope it settles soon 🤞🤞💪 xx

I was going to reply, but then I saw yours and couldn't say it any better. I wish I'd had this advice when I had it. Seren0119, I hope you start to feel better soon. It's hideously painful and uncomfortable. My doctor told me to go for a walk to get things moving, so I took the dog for a very slow walk and got stuck sitting on a park bench. I couldn't move and I was exhausted, so do move, but don't go too far is probably the lesson there.

Good luck.

X

I am really sorry to hear you developed OHSS. I did too in May on day 5 after egg collection, the day I was supposed to have an embryo transfer. My consultant told me to have protein shakes/yoghurts because the protein helps absorb the excess liquid that is building up. I had 4/5 per day for a few days together with sport drinks with electrolytes. Hot water bottle for the cramps. If you are feeling too unwell though, you should go to A & E for proper assessment and help. Good luck! I hope it settles soon.

If you can't keep fluids up seek medical advice otherwise focus on drinking fluids and electrolytes x

Hi, drink lots of water like glucose water, electrolyte, coconut water it will really help you.

Hi there, I had this twice and the above advice is exactly what I was told too. The second time it was really bad and when my breathing felt a bit strained that was the time I took myself to the hospital. Hopefully yours will ease off before that point but just to be aware that’s the point when I needed some assistance. Thankfully things improved over the next few days.x
