After over 2 years of tests with doctors and nhs hospitals we were given the diagnosis of obstructive azoospermia and CF potential carrier. We were approved for nhs funding and sent to a private clinic.
We had our first consultation at the clinic on 1st July and didn’t hear much after.
we have now had an app letter sent to us for the end of September. At university college London hospital. With urology.
Does anyone have any experience as to what to expect on our first appointment? I was hoping it would be the retrieval day but we haven’t been given information on this so I’m guessing it’s yet another consultation!
Any similar experiences or advice will be great!
Feeling very inpatient after a 3 year wait to get to this point. :,(
Thank You xx

Hiya, sorry to hear about your waiting - we also had a lot of waiting around due to sperm issues. Have they said if they’ll be trying to extract sperm surgical? That’s what they did for us and it was done on the same day/time as my egg collection.
Hiya, I have been told that our clinic won’t do the retrieval and my partner will have to have it done at University college London hospital but the rest of the treatment will be at the clinic. I guess they will be freezing the sperm after retrieval. We haven’t been told much else.
I’m just disappointed how long it has all taken and when we finally got referred to the clinic we thought it would be quicker now we have to wait again. 🤦🏻♀️ Xx
My experience with each clinic and with my husbands azoospermia diagnosis is that the first appointment with this is always a consultation.
They will have all of the information but you will find you answer the same questions repeatedly. They like to gather information themselves to make sure they have everything correct. I think this is so they can be confident with the game plan going ahead.
We found once the consultations were done that we moved through the process pretty quickly. Once you are ‘in the door’ as it is it does seem to move along. The longest delay with starting my cycle was to do with a test I needed up dating, topping up my mmr and then my cycle lining up. Hopefully once the appointment is done your experience will be like that.
Thank you! Yes I’m hoping once the consultation is done they will perform the surgical sperm retrieval quickly so we can get started on our first cycle. Luckily all of my tests have come back clear so I’m praying that it all works out! I know nothing is guaranteed but trying to stay positive!
UCLH are brilliant and very thorough especially if you have other internal complications that present themselves, I have been through my whole journey with them and they haven't disappointed. I currently have PCSO, adenomyosis, and 3 small fibroids and am currently waiting to be induced on Monday.
Try to stay positive I had to wait nearly 2 years also due to covid but was lucky enough to just get through.
Keep the faith the whole process is nerve racking and drawn out and can make you feel anxious when u just want to get going.
I pray your journey goes well try to stay positive
