Moderate OHSS

Hi all

Was confirmed on friday that i have moderate OHSS. Feeling pretty miserable and worried about it getting worse and ending up in hospital. Am 2 weeks post transfer, looking back ive had symptoms of OHSS for couple weeks but last week has been the worst. Last 3 days have pretty much been same. So much fluid my organs are been squished, so uncomfortable walking with a hunch but not able to do much all day but lie around. Cant sleep so uncomfortable. Managing to keep water and food down but in very small amounts.

Wondering if anyone else has been through this? How long took to recover? Any advice other than protein and liquids?

Ow, so sorry you’re going through this. I also went through this after my fourth transfer (second fresh) and was hospitalised twice over a weeks period and on bed rest for a further two so I know how painful and uncomfortable it is.

I was given anti-sickness medicine as I couldn’t stop vomiting… but when I could finally eat and drink, I was told to drink 4L of water and 1L of milk a day plus eat little and often, high protein food such as eggs, avocados, bit of chicken when I could stomach it, nuts. I also stuck with my broths to get something warm in me.

I spent a lot of time resting, just moving every hour or so to walk around my home and then feet back up. Use the time to catch up on your fave rubbish tv or something too, and when you feel up to it, take a walk outside.

Wishing you a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹 xxx

Thank you :)

How long after transfer did your symptoms peak? Just wish i knew if things are going to get even worse :( feel like my abdomen is going to explode, struggling to even walk around today. Did they drain your fluid in hospital?

Well I was very swollen after egg collection, but they said I was fine to go ahead with with transfer. I remained bloated but not in too much pain… I got my BFP and when I was 5w6d that’s when I felt like something had exploded and I started aggressively vomiting and was in the worst agony so was admitted to the hospital. My OHSS was exasperated because I was/am expecting twins and my HCG levels were really high.

They didn’t drain me as at that time, I didn’t have fluid. It was four days later when fluid was showing around my ovaries and I had bloods taken that revealed an infection so my medication was increased (my blood thinners in particular) and I was given 10 days of antibiotics. I was back in hospital for two days just for hydration as I was vomiting constantly.

My symptoms did eventually ease and by twelve weeks, my ovaries had reduced. My right side is still slightly swollen but I’m not in any pain with it.

Hope you feel better soon lovely. Don’t hold out if it gets too bad and you feel you need some assistance… I felt much better on strong pain meds! Xx

Wow twins! Congrats 🥳

Thanks so much for replying and the info. I think its fear of the unknown - how bad will it get, how long will it go on for is terrifying. Plus noone really wants to be in hospital right now with covid, so worrying bout whether to go in. Im drinking, eating tiny amounts and still weeing. No vomitting yet. Its just unbelievably tight and uncomfortable abdomen that i can hardly move, or sleep!

I have a 3 year old and its so hard trying to stay strong in front of her when i can hardly move! Good to know there is an end though …eventually. Bit scary how long it can go on for!

Thank you ☺️

I know at its peak, it can feel like it will never end but I promise you, it does get better with time. So long as you are passing urine, trying to keep yourself hydrated and eating little and often then you should be okay to stay out of hospital. Xx

I am so sorry to hear that you have OHSS. I found walking, even if I was hunched over, did get easier over time. But if I couldn’t do anything, I tried not to be too harsh on myself. My symptoms lasted a while but you will know when you are at your worst if you are not already there. I was admitted to hospital for a week, but pain meds and an IV drip really did help. When I was in hospital I struggled to eat, but I drank water. Little amount of fluid throughout the day is good, just try your best to keep hydrated. The only thing I can say is that I promise you it does get better even though right now it certainly doesn’t feel like it. Xx

Thank you 🥰

Its so hard! Todays been pretty awful, so im hoping its at its worst now / this is my peak, cant stop crying this evening - been strong all day in front of my 3 yo, but tonight just feeling so hopeless, not knowing how long will go on for or if its going to get worse. Scared bout going to hospital too with covid situation or bringing it home to my family. Back to the clinic tomorrow for another checkup so lets see what they say! X

I really feel for you lovely, it’s so horrible. I developed moderate-severe OHSS around day 8 post transfer. Luckily managed to avoid being hospitalised but like you walking was agony and I could barely eat anything. My doctor said to eat boiled eggs and crisps (my sodium levels were really low) and to drink Lucozade sport, there’s apparently something in it that helps. I was warned it would probably last until I was 12 weeks pregnant but luckily for me it was only bad until about 8 weeks (3 weeks after my symptoms started), after that I just felt a bit bloated and had the odd twinge of pain from my ovaries for a few weeks. Hope this passes quickly for you and huge congrats and best of luck with the pregnancy! ❤️❤️ Xx

Hi there, I’m just getting over my OHSS mine was also moderate, I was in hospital for 2 weeks. All the symptoms you have I had!! At the time you feel awful, and feel like your never going to get better! But Iv had mine for 9 weeks now and I’m finally on the mend, I still feel really tired most days and need to nap and suffer with bloating! I had 8/9 cm of fluid in my stomach it’s now passed, but my overies are still suffering but 🤞🤞🤞 they will go down soon! Just try and rest do what your body is telling you, if you don’t get any better go to hospital!! Hope you have a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹 xxxxxx

Thanks guys. Been clinic this morn and have 1 litre of fluid in abdomen. Taken bloods and put me on blood thinning injections. Telling me to stay home for now as drinking and weeing still. Theyll review bloods tomorrow and tell me if need to be admitted. So uncomfortable. They said prob early onset as ovaries almost normal size but a lot of fluid, so guessing that means they shouldve picked it up sooner and potentially not done transfer!!
