Fetus measuring small on first scan after IVF. Any positive stories? ๐Ÿ˜”

Hello.

We had our first scan today after our IVF transfer.

I am 7weeks 2 days but the fetus only measured between 6weeks 4days/5days.

The nurse said there was a good, strong heartbeat but I'm so disheartened about the measurements.

This happened after our first round when a heartbeat was seen but fetus measured small.

We are booked in again next week but I'm not hopeful.

So sad ๐Ÿ˜”

Don't be too sad, if there is a strong heartbeat it could just be a late implanter as thats only 3-4 days different. Remember every pregnancy is different. I know people who have measured behind all the way through their pregnancies and their children are toddlers now! x

Hi lovely, I obviously am no expert but itโ€™s great to read there is a strong heartbeat. I wanted to echo what daisy said baby size can change all the time from scan to scan. One of my scans showed his legs were behind and his head and tummy were miles ahead but the recent scan shows his legs have caught up and his head and tummy are within range. I know your scans are earlier but just wanted to let you know this can be normal so I have everything crossed for your next scan xxx

As long as that little heart is beating then donโ€™t worry. People and babies come in all shapes and sizes.

My sister was frightened to death over a potential hole in her babies heart and small head. The next scan showed it was all normal but she had that weight on her mind until her next scan and it was awful.

Xx

Thank you for your reply. It's such a traumatic period isn't it? I hope your sister had a successful outcome x

Yes the baby was absolutely fine, yeah itโ€™s a very stressful time especially when itโ€™s been so hard getting this far xx

My miscarriage specialists said a whole week behind is still completely fine (and he scares me about everything else with his pessimism so it's a lot coming from him). When the embryo is that little it is really hard to measure. If s/he is at an odd angle it could mean the measurement is a couple of mm off which is immediately 4 or 5 days behind. It makes you wonder as there are sooo many women who have no early scans or didn't have the exact dates because they didn't do ivf- they don't have to go through this early measurements stress and a lot of them run a few days behind without anyone ever finding out. I also often think about how embryos are at completely different stages when they are transferred and how this isn't really a big deal. A strong heartbeat is so much more important. Please try not to worry (I understand how difficult this is). Hang in there! Xx

I am so grateful for your response. I've got a retroverted uterus so this may have an impact on the measurements. Fingers crossed xx

I was told anything within 5 days different is normal - were you told different? xx

It was quite a strange appointment. The nurse seemed relatively unconcerned at the start but the longer the conversation went on she started talking about Epu appointments for medically managed miscarriage. I came out of there completely confused. Fingers crossed

Oh gosh that sounds so very stressful! You poor thing! At least you have another scan in a week so not too long, although I am sure the next several days will drag horrendously. Hope all works out for you xx
