PPROM at 24 weeks - anyone else? x

Hi there ladies,

I had a successful round of IVF and am now 6 months pregnant. However after a fairly heavy bleeding episode and other spotting/discharge issues before that I went in to hospital at the start of last week.

After an emergency scan on Friday I have been diagnosed with PPROM. With some seriously bad luck the membrane which protects the baby and holds the amniotic fluid around baby in womb has ruptured. So I am now at risk of infection and baby’s lungs are compromised. She was also showing up as being a little on the smaller side than what she should be at this stage. They just don’t know how this happens, the cause could be a number of things, and there isn’t really any way of repairing the damage.

I am now on medication and at home resting, with further appointments every other day or so to check bloods and baby’s heartbeat.

I don’t think this is a very common problem and we are so so worried and distressed at the moment. But trying our best to stay strong for our baby girl.

If any of you have experienced this and have any advice I would really appreciate to hear from you :) x

Sorry to hear this! I think you might struggle to find help on this forum as most of us are still trying to conceive....you might find better experiences on the NCT forum - link below. Wishing you all the best.xx

Hi TessaPayne, a very close friend of mine suffered PPROM at 25 weeks and gave birth by emergency cesarean at 26 weeks, 5 weeks ago now. Baby is doing absolutely amazingly & continuing to thrive. I'm sorry you're going through that & I have no experience personally of pregnancy yet but thought if the positive outcome from my Friend's traumatic start to Motherhood could help give some comfort, it is worth letting you know. Stay well & best wishes xx

P.s as Cinderella said NCT should be a great support for finding women with personal experience of pregnancy 🙂

Hi Tessa. I’m so sorry to hear this, must be really distressing for you especially after going through IVF to get your precious rainbow. I would reiterate what Cinderella has said and try the NCT website as your more likely to have a response about pregnancy and it’s challenges. I really hope everything works out and I’m sure your in excellent hands. Xxx

Thank you both so much and hearing positive stories is really helpful for us right now so I appreciate you telling me about your friends story.

It’s very traumatic and quite a shock, but we are doing all we can to keep positive and stay strong.

Hi Tessa,

I’m so sorry to hear this, my membranes ruptured at 27 weeks whilst at work after our 4th round of IVF. I did have a huge bleeding episode in the first trimester which I think along with other issues, could have been the reason why it happened. I was admitted to hospital for 4 days where I was monitored and then given steroid shots for the lungs (if you haven’t had this already, I’d try and book it in ASAP).

I was discharged and had appointments with my local maternity day care clinic but the day after discharge, my boy was born at 28 + 3, I managed to keep him in for 6 days. He was delivered by emergency c section as his foot was in my birth canal by the time we got to hospital!

We were in NICU for a total of 9 weeks and was discharged 3 weeks before due date. It was a tough journey and we’ve had a couple of visits back to hospital since leaving but I’m proud to say he is doing amazingly now, hitting all of his milestones and more and will be 1 next month.

The only advice I would give is rest up and try to relax (a lot easier said than done) and go with your gut instinct if you feel anything is not right. This is what I did and I was right to go to hospital as he wasn’t hanging around!!

You are more than welcome to private message me if you have any questions about anything. It’s a very scary journey but miracles do happen, my boy is testament to that and there were many babies born at earlier than him that are now thriving.

I wish you all the very best and am sending lots of positive vibes your way xxx

Wow, your story is quite something. I’m equally sorry that you had to go through that tough tough journey, albeit after 4 rounds of IVF. You are my hero!

I’m resting at home now. I had two steroid shots at hospital and now on a course of antibiotics.

Every day counts as ofcourse you know. We’re just hoping and praying that she’s in there fighting away and developing as much as she can with such little fluid.

I will be going in to MAU tomorrow and checks every other day pretty much. Next scan is next Thursday. So we hold out for that and cross that bridge when it comes depending on progress.

I may very well need to message you privately so thank you for offering.

Thanks so much for replying and sharing.

That’s great you’ve had the steroids as they do really help.

Every day does indeed count so take each day as it comes. It’s all in the hands of nature now, these babies are tough so I’m sure she is fighting inside still.

Message me anytime. Good luck and take care ❤️ Xx
