Ivf

Me and my husband have undergone all tests and i have been diagnosed as pcos having one of my tubes blocked. We have been recommened ivf, but we love in cambridge and ivf is £5000 which we cannot afford. My parents live in london, so we are thinking of shifting care there. Do i need to transfer my gp there too? And how do we decide which clinic to chose? Have no experience in this regard, it would be very helpful if someone could give us some advice :)

I think you have to live in a certain area for a certain amount of time before being entitled to treatment under another area unfortunately.xx

You can find the CCG policy for your council online and obviously Im not sure where you would be planning to live for. Like I said I may have that completely wrong but worth looking into before you take the plunge and move.xx

Costs in London are about the same at £5k plus. Ours is in Surrey and stops shy of £6k.Please have a look at the clinic's websites for their prices for a comparison to the Cambridge one.

But i have heard the 1st cycle is nhs covered?

We didn't qualify for NHS as my husband has a child from a prior relationship so we've always been private. And apparently even without having a child from before, not all areas guarantee everyone a free cycle on the NHS.

Hi DrNim,

I also live in Cambridge so understand the frustration with their currently being no IVF funding. I wouldn’t recommend Bourn unfortunately, I did three rounds there and they were useless but I have heard that Cambridge IVF does low cost packages to try help those who are struggling to fund it so might be worth reaching out to them?

We ended up moving to a London clinic and the prices are higher. If you’re hoping to qualify for NHS treatment in London, you would have to be living their for a certain amount of time but you would need to check that with the CCG for that area to be sure x

Prices are higher in london? Me and my husband thought we would be getting a free cycle their? Under nhs?

You don’t live in London, you live in Cambridge so you wouldn’t qualify for free NHS Treatment in London.

Ah ok I see. You would have to move back to London to qualify though. It’s rubbish cambridge doesn’t have funding but it’s not likely to change anytime soon. You can find the links to the local CCGs on the fertility fairness page x

Even if you move to London, every borough has different rules so you are still not guaranteed an NHS round. Plus they will be serving a larger population so waiting times will be long.

Lots of things to consider.

Hope you are able to make the right decision.

One positive of London is there are so many private clinics to choose from if you need private x

It’s so unfair that some areas have no funded cycles 😔

Like others have said I would check carefully with the CCG you plan on moving to. When we were waiting for our first cycle to begin, we were moving house. I liked a place that was only a few minutes away but would have put us in a different CCG and found out you had to have been registered with a GP there for (I think from memory) 2 years before they would fund fertility treatment. We had to let that one go because it didn’t make sense but would have been a nightmare if we’d bought it without realising x
