Yesterday eve on and off for a few hours I had period type pains - nothing severe but I knew about it. Couple with back ache (back ache isn’t new for me I’ve had it one and off since the start).
This morning I have a dull ache like period again above my lady area (lower pelvic) & I’ve wiped and got some brown old looking blood (no lumps just light atm). Naturally freaked but surprisingly calm.
Probs irrelevant but will mention today would be day 2-3 of my mensural cycle if I was having one.
I’d quite like to make sure it’s all ok with a professional. Do I call my midwife who I’ve been asssigned but not met yet, or my GP.
I say I’m fairly calm but has anyone has this and all be ok?
Thanks xx

I had exactly the same thing happen to me at around the same time. And yes it would of been around the time I would of had my period. I spoke to the midwife and she reassured me, she just said don’t worry it’s old blood and if it turns red then to go in.
I had another scan last week at 10 weeks and everything is fine.
Thanks Hope4040. Should I just inform my midwife still? Hoping it stays light / stops and the cramping on and off fades.
Was your 10-week scan private? We were thinking about a private one at 10 weeks but depending how this episode turns out we might end up being checked anyway. Will see. Xx
It’s entirely up to you. I would say going by my own personal experience there’s no need unless it got any worse. The brown spotting lasted about a day for me and I was getting cramps with it too.
For your own peace of mind I would get a scan booked for next week when you will be 10 weeks. You will surprised how much it’s grown.
We paid for a private scan as haven’t wanted to bother the NHS and I know it’s not going to be long now before I get the standard 12 /13 week scan. Although I’ve still not had a letter in the post with when that scan will be.
I’ve had my booking in appt over the phone with the midwife and I’ve gone in for bloods and urine sample but that’s it so far xxx
Ok that makes sense. Exactly that I don’t want to bother the NHS if it’s all normal and just monitor it. I will book the 10-week scan today - which is the 13th but I’ll book for 14th 😉.
It’s literally a dull continuous ache at times like a heavy period, right down just about my lady area.
I have had my pre appointment - bloods, urine, BMI etc and have my midwifes details but not had the phone call yet. She was on annual leave late week, so hoping to hear this week or soon.
I always thought 13 was unlucky too but I ended up having a double transfer on Friday 13th March so I’m now starting to think it’s lucky 🙃
I think you will be absolutely fine, it sounds exactly what I had. I do remember how panicked I was at the time when I saw it. It’s just a bit of a shock isn’t it. Even when the spotting did stop my mind wasn’t at rest until I had that scan. Xx
Oh wow that’s amazing! The 13th isn’t unlucky for you, the opposite infact. How wonderful and congratulations.
You’re right, I say I’m calm and I am but you also have the part of your mind that wanders to that negative space. I probably am also leaning on the fact that I’ve had hardly any symptoms so in my head I’m trying to convince myself that I’m not going down the path no one wants... xx
Oh that's the same for me, I'm still waiting for my 12/13 week appointment but nothing yet. I had a private 10 week scan yesterday, crazy how much its grown but also still very small.
This is really common so try not to worry too much. Period types pains are really normal as your uterus is stretching to accommodate that growing little bean 😊
I also had a private scan at 10 weeks, just for peace of mind so if it gives you the same, it’s definitely worth looking into xx
Morning lovely, thanks for replying again to me, you usually do and I’m so grateful. I wanted to post here first before googling and freaking myself out. Should I just keep and eye or report it anyway? I don’t want to waste anyone’s time but not sure what’s what for notes etc. hope you’re ok xx
If it’s just a little bit of brown blood, I wouldn’t bother, I had something very similar and it went away within a few hours but if it gets any heavier or becomes red then I would call your EPU rather than your midwife.
If you do decide to book a private scan, you can tell them what’s happened and they can check for any causes of bleeding for you xx
I’ve got the details for the EPU so can call if needed. This is me all over not wanting to do the wrong thing and worrying who I should call or what procedure I should follow 🙈 xx
A constant dullness / ache / pressure - I mean I can deal with it if that’s all it is lol. Well they said to wean off but if I felt more confident continuing them to 12 weeks that’s also ok xx
I had the exact same I really wouldn’t worry just old blood like you said if it gets heavier then call your doctors 🙂 I get it not wanting to bother the nhs I was the same so if you can just book it private as when I rang my doctor she rang Epu they wouldn’t see me till the week after as they are only seeing woman who are bleeding so will not see it as urgent. Last week when I had abit of blood discharge I didn’t even ring the doctors just booked in for a scan it’s amazing the difference at 9 weeks 💖
Thank you for the reply hun. This is what I thought. I’ll let me midwife know and take some paracetamol. It’s the full ache like I’m on my period but not. Like other have said probs the scratching and adjusting, I believe week 8-9 is quite a growth spurt according to my pregnancy app. I will book a scan next week I think. Xx
So weird I just went toilet and wiped and abit of blood 😩🤦🏽♀️ this is so annoying I’ve got my first midwife appointment though today over phone so just gana see if I bleed more and tell her! This is so harrrddddd
Omg how odd is that?! Like you told me, try not to worry. It’s so frigging hard though isn’t it. Constant balls of anxiety! Mention it to your midwife. I called mine and she said I was on her list today for the appointment and she’s calling at 3. I’m going to have a warm bath and rest today. As should you too 😘xx
You could always call the Early Pregnancy Unit (epu) and they'll scan you. At 10 weeks you can go for private scan and Harmony bloods to check everything is chromosomally normal and even find out gender if you want to. I went to the Fetal Medicine Clinic on Harley street and they were amazing! So through and many I could totally relax during the 12 week NHS scan knowing she was well. They're not as thorough as they're time poor.
I’ve spoken to the midwife and she said if the cramps worsen to call EPU but it’s quite normal as is the brown discharge. She said if it was red it would be time to get it checked. I might just drop the EPU a bell.
Wow I didn’t know that. Was it expensive to have all that done? I’m in Kent so would need to travel to Harley Street but doable.
Yes it's around £400 but that includes a scan at 10 weeks and again at 20 weeks and the blood tests. It's really worth it. Do you want to find out the gender? If yes then it's definitely worth it. We're team green.
The scans are really thorough, they measure everything and take lots of photos.
You can only get this at week 10 or 11 so look into booking it soon.
Hi I bleed all the way through to 14 weeks not till my 20 week scan I find I have low lying placenta which caused all the bleeding. But so many women bleed seems to be very common. Only advice the midwife give me was longs your not in any pain or not soaking through a pad within an hour.
Wish you well in your pregnancy. Dont think you ever stop worrying xxx
But Last night I had this dull period ache for a few hours and I have it again this morning. I’ve left a message with EPU to call just to see what they say. The brown spotting I’m not worried about it’s just the annoying uncomfortable ache going on. Xx
