Anyone done a mock transfer?

I’m was due to start my first ivf cycle (short protocol) just before lockdown but had a mock transfer just before that (also cancelled). I think the reason the doctor wanted me to do a mock was because a few years ago I had a LEEP procedure after a pap came back abnormal. Now I’m thinking that the mock transfer would be a “nice to have” but I’m not sure 1. Whether my patience can wait out doing this the cycle before an ivf cycle given the wait we have all had to endure during lockdown, and 2. Whether I should risk doing an extra procedure given the covid situation. All obviously dependent on whether my clinic even goes ahead with these type of procedures and when they open again, just thinking ahead here :)

Thoughts from anyone who has done a mock transfer before would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi I had a mock transfer before my first ivf cycle. They said it was to make sure all went well on the actual day and to write down what size equipment (for want of a better word 🙈) and measurements of where to put the embryo for whoever was doing on the day x hope that makes sense and is helpful x

I had a mock transfer at one of my early nurse planning appts. It sort of surprised me a bit as i wasn’t expecting it to be done! But it was like a smear test ... I didn’t feel anything ...and it was a couple of minutes to check there would not be any problems with the cervix on actual transfer day. It gave me a bit of peace of mind that the transfer would be straightforward! Completely different environment now I appreciate that but it was an easy procedure to have done if that helps reassure!

Ive had a mock transfer! I think its a good idea if you have had the Letz proceedure done which can sometimes cause scarring to the cervix and it allows them to check they can pass the catheter smoothly and pain free.xx

I've also had one. There is a small risk that on transfer day the procedure could be cancelled or the embryo lost if there is a problem passing it through your cervix. It's also to make sure the doctor has a good understanding of the shape of everything for each person so everything goes quicker and smoother on the day also. That's what I was told basically by my doctor anyway. It didn't hurt just like a pap smear type thing xx

I’ve also had LEEP done. I didn’t have a mock because I had had a IUI done previously so they thought it would be fine. It ended up taking ages for my embryo transfer, and they had to get their top guy to use a small catheter to finally get the embryo in through the cervix. I really think this was largely due to me not drinking enough water. For IUI I had a really full bladder and it was pretty straightforward (but v uncomfortable) For IVF I was told to have a ‘comfortably full’ bladder which I took to mean a lot less than IUI and it was painful and took ages. The transfer also failed, not sure if that was reason or not. I’ll always drink loads of water in future! Sorry not sure if this helps with your decision x

I also had a mock transfer. They can do it at any point in your cycle, it’s just to check there are no issues with your cervix etc so it is worthwhile so you don’t get any unfortunate surprises on transfer day x

Hi, I’m exactly the same as you and had a letz in 2014 - it was just to check they could get the catheter through. My mock was fine but on my transfer day they had to use a more firm catheter as my cervix bled a bit - which apparently can be normal due to hormones from progesterone etc. Good luck lovely xx (ps: they were a tad uncomfortable but nothing major so don’t worry) xx
