Can someone undergo IVF to have twins.?
My worry : Can someone undergo IVF to... - Fertility Network UK
My worry
Theoretically if they implant two embryos and both stick then yes? But I’m not sure if you can ethically undergo IVF with no fertility problems purely to have twins xx
IVF does not guarantee twins so no. It doesn’t guarantee any pregnancy but it can help those who are struggling to conceive naturally. You definitely shouldn’t be trying to have IVF in order to have a multiple pregnancy if you can conceive naturally, I don’t know any doctor who would consider that a good idea but hoping that’s not what you mean?!x
Guidelines that IVF consultants followed can be found here - hfea.gov.uk/about-us/our-ca...
In short, I'd say it would be very unusual to find a clinic in the U.K that would agree to implant multiple embryos all because of a personal preference for twins.
Although twins sounds lovely, the reality can be brutally exhausting as well as increasing risk of difficult pregnancy and labour. I'd think really carefully!
I wouldn’t wish ivf on anyone so you would be crazy to want to go through it in the hope to have twins if you can conceive naturally.
The emotional rollercoaster of ivf can ruin your life
I had IVF and it worked first time. I asked my fertility nurse if they would implant two embryos regardless of there quality. She said it wasn't the clinics policy to implant two if not necessary. The thing is I am now glad. Before I really liked the idea of twins. But, now the idea of having a multiple pregnancy and caring for twins just seems like it would be too stressful. Although, people do manage. I prefer singleton pregnancies lol.
Agreed...I have fertility issues and was always hoping for twins...but whenever I implanted two it never worked and I bled out before OTD. Also Dr told me multiple pregnancies can lead to more complications and once born if one is ill the other one gets neglected and not enjoyable. One is more than enough to deal with for me personally.
You need to remember you may not end up with twins even if ivf worked. Identical twins/triplets etc all come from one embryo that has split into multiples. You could have 2 embryos put back and in theory could end up with half a football team. Also I don’t think a clinic would do it if that was the only reason you were doing ivf.
The NHS only implant one embroy at a time. Still a chance this may split but pretty low I think. There are exceptions to them only implanting one: sometimes your age and the quality of your eggs may then make them go for 2.
Hi Adom,
With private clinics in U.K. some are slightly more willing to implant 2 eggs if you are over 40 but not under.
They will advise against it though and make you read the literature on the high risks of having multiple births to mother and babies. Like the other ladies have mentioned, definitely not sure if there isn’t a fertility issue and you’re under 40 x🌺x
