Hi I am new here..

I am just about to see my GP to try and get IVF treatment after finding out that this is the best way forward for me to have a baby. I had an ectopic pregnancy in august which left me with 1 damaged/blocked fallopian tube. I know very little about the different IVF treatments or what to expect. I thought id join this group to find out more and maybe speak to others on a similar path.

Does anyone know what to expect when you go for your first meeting about IVF? X

Hi! Everyone here has been so encouraging and welcoming to me, I’m sure you’ll find it just as supportive.

My first meeting was to discuss what it was I wanted, or what I was looking for, IVF or IUI. If you’re NHS I’m not entirely sure how that goes I’m afraid, i wasn’t eligible so only know the private process. But wishing you all the best luck and I’m sure someone will reassure you on here x

Hi there,

I hope you are doing ok 💜

I found myself writing a similar post when we first found out our journey wasn't going to be easy, and that IVF was the best way forwards.

Our first NHS appointment took a long time to come around, and when it did it was just me that went as no-one had explained that both yourself and your partner are meant to attend.

I was an emotional wreck, all on my own at the fertility centre.

I saw our consultants assistant doctor (not that I knew this at the time- I thought she would be our doctor)

And she weighed me, checked my height, told me my BMI Had to be below 30 (mine was 31) and just asked some very basic questions. She booked me in for a pelvic scan and some blood tests, and that was about it.

I used this time to ask all the questions I had, as I was in a bit of a state- recovering from the news that my Other halves swimmers were in a pretty bad way.

I thought the road to Motherhood was over there and then.

She explained IVF and ICSI to me, we spoke about insemination, and supplements we should both be taking on a daily basis. She also gave me some print outs explaining about diet and exercise and limiting alcohol intake etc.

We are now waiting to go on the waiting list for IVF - waiting is something you will have to get used to if you are going through the NHS.

I am of course eternally grateful that we get any help! But the waiting is so hard.

Good luck with the appointment.

Here if you ever need to chatt xxx

Hi! thank you very much for sharing your experience with me and thank you for telling me your partner needs to attend the appointment with you as I wouldn't have known that.

if you don't mind me asking, did they say how long the waiting list would roughly be?

I believe that I have to travel outside of my town for an appointment as there's no fertility clinics near me.

I wish you all the best on your journey, hope you don't mind me following your page to keep in touch xxx

Yup expect lots of waiting. I was wait listed too and I do not meet the BMI requirement so tried exercising. Then knew my Fallopian tubes were blocked, so now having surgery. I suggest you make yourself a list of questions so you will know what to ask for your first meet. And force yourself to look at the list and tell the consultant to be patient as you check your list - I know how it is bringing a list yet ending up not using it only to realize you forgot to ask those questions after the meeting! :)

Thank you for suggesting the check list, I will definitely do that! Wishing you all the best with your operation and rest of your journey xx

Thank you, surgery went well and recovering right now. Funny how we're all staying home, when I need to stay home for medical reasons. How are you now dear?

Hi and welcome. My GP referred me to the hospital where a consultant did tests and prescribed clomid (was in and out for 1 year or more) before the hospital consultant referred me to a fertility unit. There a few blood tests again before we were put on the list. All in all took us nearly 3 years by the time we had our first embryo transfer. But seems you have your diagnosis so might move faster x wishing you all the very best on your journey ❤️

Hello! Welcome and best wishes for your journey. They will probably ask you about your cycles (length, frequency etc.), also probably will want to know what fertility tests you've had already (blood tests, scans etc.). They will also ask you how long you've been trying (your GP has probably already asked you that anyway). This bit I actually wish I'd lied about (I'm not sure if I should be giving that as advice) as they put any treatment on hold until we'd been trying for 2 years (and then it took another 6 months after that to get referral through - I don't know how that works with you having an ectopic pregnancy last year though).

Hopefully they'll give YOU information and let you know your options.

Lots of love xxx

Hi there! Thank you for the reply and sharing your experience with me😊 that’s also great advice, I’ll be sure to let them know we were trying to 2 years.

Wishing you the best on your journey xxx

Yeah, that might not be applicable to you with your fallopian tube situation, but definitely check out your local trust's criteria. I was underweight, so had to gain weight for treatment (I probably should have been trying to do this sooner if I'd understood the criteria).

Hey. Hope you’re well and sounds like on the road to a new chapter. This is all positive progress.

So i went to see the Gp and had ovulation test and husband swimmers of which both were fine then referred to fertility clinic as unexplained.

From fertility to beginning was very little time , October first meeting fertility consultant to January first ivf cycle. Prior to this I had been to gp to explain our 2 year struggle to become pregnant, and was referred straight to fertility clinic. Normal waiting times here about 2 months. Then at your meeting you get the ball rolling with lots of questions about your own medical history mainly to do with your periods, cycles, previous pregnancies etc.

Which stage at you at? Is your meeting with gp to ask about fertility referral? I only know about our experience with our NHS’s pct and timeline not private . Sounds like you’ve made a great start.

X

Hi there ☺️ sounds like your experience getting an appointment moved quite fast? I have been waiting to get an appointment for fertility since November as it was then I found out i would need ivf. My doctors and hospital consultant keep blaming each other for the delay. I now have a telephone appointment with a GP scheduled for the 1st April so I’m hoping that they can refer me for ivf over the phone😊🤞🏼

& Thank you for the information about the first meeting ❤️xxx
