Embryoscope... is it worth it?

Hi all!

Just a quick question really. Any help is appreciated. I had my IVF consultation yesterday for my NHS round. The consultant stated that it might be worth thinking about using the Embryoscope as it gives more of a chance of getting Frosties. It’s £450 but there was no pressure. I just want to know if you guys think I should go for it? Any information would be appreciated !

Hi there

I was listening to a podcast on fertility treatment and they mentioned that on the HFEA official website there is a part where they categorise all the 'add-on' treatments fertility clinics offer using a traffic light system; green=lots of evidence, etc. I haven't looked myself but this might be included and since its the HFEA its completely impartial advice.

I think it depends on your individual circumstances as to whether or not it helps and if it’s your NHS round I’m guessing it’s your first round so you probably don’t know how your embryos will develop. For me there are two benefits to it. Firstly the embryos aren’t disturbed each day by being removed to look under the microscope. In my mind that has to be good for them. Secondly you will know if your embryos have developed as expected. I know some ladies on here have seen embryos divide abnormally when using the embryoscope and they wouldn’t have known had they not used it. However if all your embryos do divide normally then it wouldn’t be much use, so peace of mind more than anything. When I had my fresh round I had the same debate you’re having and I decided that it was an NHS round, so essentially free and justified investing in the embryoscope that way. For me, it didn’t change any decisions that were made as all my embryos divided normally and it was the final grading that decided the order which they were transferred, but it did give me some comfort knowing that they had got there normally. Oh and another bonus if you are successful is getting the usb stick showing your little embryos dividing. It’s pretty cool and I’ll be showing mine to my boys when they are older.
