Hey everyone, finally had our first appointment though and I don’t know why I am nervous!! Please could someone tell me what can I expect from the first appointment?
Thanks again, I love this site and to have found more women going through similar treatments makes me feel so much better that we are all in this together!! ❤️

This is your first appointment before any fertility treatments? Be sure to take notes as there is a lot to learn. You will likely give blood to try to see what the root cause of your infertility is. Sometimes there's a reason like low AMH, hubby's sperm quality, or another hormonal issue. A lot of the time it's just "unexplained infertility", but don't let that get you down. IVF is the way to go! You'll likely go over the IUI option prior to jumping to IVF (let me tell you from my own experience and that of friends - IUI is not worth it at all. Its a ton of getting your hopes up for no good reason). Go the IVF route, do your research, and take deep breaths. its such a roller coaster but it is 1000000% worth it when you hear you baby's heart beat. We are living proof good luck xo
Ahh thank you so much for this ❤️ it is our first appointment with fertility specialist now, had all blood tests done and from what we have been told already IVF isn’t the place for us, ICIS is what just our doctor thinks we will have to go down as it more partners sperm, he first test came out very low mobility but good quality and second better mobility but not great and still good quality so this is giving me some hope that something will happen. So nervous about it all, but as you said it will hopefully be all worth it xox
i'm pretty sure ivf + icsi is what we did. I'm not sure you can do icsi without ivf. they go hand in hand babes. reach out if you have any questions. hubby and i went through the craziest ride the past 10 months and now we have a little boy in the oven. i cannot stress enough how important deep breaths are !!!
Be prepared for a long process. You’re in the right place to off load your thoughts and feelings. Just read through some of mine to see the highs and the lows I go through. Still not started treatment. Been trying for two years. Was referred back in Nov when been trying for 18 months or so. Still waiting to begin treatment x
We have seen a specialist who said IVF was the way we’d likely have to go. She wanted another blood test from me (is had one on day 3 and during ovulation) and another sperm sample (he had done one already, and it was well below normal ranges on all levels 😞
She told him in the appointment to take Proxeed sachets. They’re available from amazon and cost £80 a month so aren’t cheap at all, but after a week of taking them he had another sperm test and the results were great - well above the average on all levels. He had been eating a bit better and going to the gym more so lifestyle changes have probably helped as well. Could be worth trying them to get a bit ahead of the game if there is a sperm issue involved? Or maybe wait until the specialist advises.
Otherwise it was lots of fast taking and us nodding but not really understanding... Then a letter came through to say we have a phone call booked for end of June, in which we discuss next steps for us (IVF isn’t funded locally so I guess this would involve referrals to a private clinic).
Take a notepad or even ask if you could record what they say on your phone, as it’s all a bit daunting..!
But wishing you the best of luck and hopefully you get some answers and even more importantly the result you want xxx
Hiya! We had our first appointment at the fertility clinic today, I am such a worrier but it wasn’t half as bad as my head had made out lol
We were seen by the nurse first who did our height, weight and BMI checks. Then we met the consultant who went through our results so far (blood test and sperm), asked us about our health etc etc - we are currently ‘unexplained’!
She has referred me for a HSG and scan to check for things like cysts. I also had another blood test today for AMH, LH and thyroid check.
She estimated that our next appointment will be in 3 months to discuss results and if still unexplained than IVF will start about 3 months later.
Not sure if all clinics are similar but hope this helps put your mind at rest. I came out feeling positive - one step closer 😊 xx
Ahh thank you for this, deffo helping me relax and not be so nervous. Ahh I hope these next few month go quick for you so you can find out and start with the process! xxx
Hi, I'm adding the following. Before beginning a cycle of IVF, consider important questions, including:
How many embryos will be transferred? The number of embryos transferred is typically based on the age and number of eggs retrieved. Since the rate of implantation is lower for older women, more embryos are usually transferred.
Most doctors follow specific guidelines to prevent a higher order multiple pregnancy. And in some countries, legislation limits the number of embryos that can be transferred at once. Make sure you and your doctor agree on the number of embryos that will be transferred before the transfer procedure.
What will you do with any extra embryos? Extra embryos can be frozen and stored for future use for several years. Not all embryos will survive the freezing and thawing process, although most will.
Cryopreservation can make future cycles of IVF less expensive and less invasive.
How will you handle a multiple pregnancy? If more than one embryo is transferred to your uterus, IVF can result in a multiple pregnancy, which poses health risks for you and your babies. In some cases, fetal reduction is used to help a woman deliver fewer babies with lower health risks. So this may be another ethical, emotional and psychological consequence.
We have our first appointment with a private IVF clinic next week. We’ve already had various tests done through the GP/local hospital before we got the news that we weren’t eligible for IVF on the NHS. They should be able to get hold of our results so far so I’m assuming our first consultation will be more discussion about what our options will be rather than tests and examinations. I’d be interested to hear how your first meeting goes. Best of luck!
