Nervous. EC on Monday. What to expect? OHSS?

Hi everyone,

We have finally been given the go ahead for our ec on Monday. I have 16 follies ready now and another 20 or so nearly there. Needless to say I’m in quite a bit of pain and feel like a whale. The clinic have been great and have been concerned about the possibility of me overstimulating but all seems ok at the mo.

So a few questions - what should I expect on the day of collection? Ive been told I’ll be asleep which I’m happy about. Will I be alone for the procedure? When will my OH do the deed? Before, after, during? How long until we find out the results?

Secondly, with that amount of follies, Is it highly likely that I will develop ohss and everything will have to be frozen?

Any advice would be great!!! Xxx

So collection day...you will be told when you need to start fasting. My OH did hi business just before I went in, but he wasn't allowed in. You would have changed into your gown and then when all is ready you walk into the theatre and they put a drip in your hand and most people will fall asleep within seconds. By the time you regain consciousness everything will be done and your nurse will tell you the number of eggs collected. In terms of OHSS you would probably know by now if you are at risk. I had to change my trigger to busuralin and I was communicated well in advance that they wouldn't do fresh cycle. Hope it helps x

I was awake for both my egg collections, just sedated and it was probably a little bit more uncomfortable than a smear test but over in a couple of minutes. My OH was also in the room with me and was sitting beside the bed letting me squeeze his hand! I guess different clinics have different procedures, but it is a very quick process and hopefully you’ll be home before you know it and start to feel better with a good few eggs retrieved :)

I have my egg collection on Monday too. Here's hoping to our one egg(cos that's all you need) being in the collection. The sedation was my first time with anaesthetic - I had a fun dream. Good luck.

Hi, wishing you lots of luck for Monday! I also had a higher amount collected (38) but they told me in advance that we would do a freeze all cycle to avoid OHSS and they changed my

Trigger injection to lower the risks. Have to be honest I was in a bit of pain after and quite uncomfortable, so be prepared to rest up and take it easy, and after drink plenty of water and high protein meals!

The actual collection is nothing to worry about, I remember being told “you’ll start to feel drowsy” and then I don’t remeber anything until waking up in recovery where they told us how many eggs were collected. And then the embryologist came and saw us before we left to update us.

My OH was be called whilst I was having ec to do the deed.

Every clinic and there approach is different but That was our experience.

Wishing you lots of luck for it!

Xxx
