I waited until I was past 12 weeks and chose a dye without ammonia. I think the consensus is that the amount of chemicals in dye is generally low and unlikely to do any harm. X

Think you!! Don’t think I dare risk it just in case! Think I’d just blame that if anything happened!!

I’ll just have bad hair over Christmas lol xx

I was the same. I had so many greys in the first trimester, it was awful! I've only dyed my hair twice during my pregnancy even though I'm sure it would have been ok. When you do do it, make sure the room is well ventilated. Hope you're feeling well? Xx

I’m sure it would be ok but I don’t think I’ll risk it!!

Yeah I’m feeling ok thank you, finish work tomorrow for Christmas so can’t wait for that!! Not many symptoms yet but it’s only early days!! We’ve got our scan booked for the 7th of jan eekkkkk xx

I didn't get any major symptoms so hopefully you'll be as lucky (although you'll just be stressed that you don't feel pregnant🤣). I hope you have a lovely Christmas and look forward to your update in January xx

I was dying my hair when pregnant with my son only with ammonia free colours and as early as from 5/6wks pregnant all was good with me and my son, full term pregnancy.

I’m going to do the same this time round too ;))

Personally I didn’t get my hair dyed in the first trimester if anything had gone I didn’t want to blame myself but that’s me.

I recently asked my midwife at my 16 week appointment about having my hair dyed at my hairdressers. She said going darker was better than having my hair bleached. I usually have an all over light brown similar to my natural colour with highlights. She said it wouldn’t do any harm but not to get it done too often. Hope that helps a bit xoxo

I dye my roots all the time even with my 2 full term pregnancies my hairs dark so no bleach

Great thanks everyone!! I’m going to leave it just till I’ve had my first scan!! Then it will be so ready for doing!! Not sure I’ll cope that long tbh lol I have plum colour hair so the colour fades so much xxx

I was told that you can dye hair, if you don't get it on the scalp at all -- it's too toxic for that. So I suppose doing an ombre is okay, but dying roots isn't?

I waited until I was 12 weeks and went to have highlights, didn't want to risk putting anything on my scalp, they say it's safe but it's got so many chemicals xxxxx

I bought some with the intention of doing mine before transfer and then promptly forgot all about it. I’ve read that it’s supposedly safe but personally I’m going to try to make it to 12 weeks before thinking about doing it. In the meantime I’ll just have to put up with my three toned (grey included) hair colour lol xx

The L’Oréal root sprays are a god send! Instant goes from grey to whatever colony spray you choose. You can also but colour pencils as well! X

Hi Lisa. I have had a word with my own hairdresser, and she reckons that most of the professional hair colours could be harmful if left on for a while. However, she said that if you were just having something like highlights done using foil, then the roots tend not to absorb much if any of the colour, and the rest of the hair is dead anyway!! However, “Holland & Barrett” do carry a range of safe hair colourants to use during pregnancy. They are a nationwide outfit, so I am sure you would be able to visit one fairly locally. I also recently spoke with the “Cosmetic and Perfumery Association (CTPA) and they assure me that hair colourants are one of the most studied consumer products on the market, and are safe for all women, pregnant or not. But if you are still concerned, why don’t you buy a chemical free semi-permanent dye such as “Clairol Nice’n’Easy”, which lasts from 6 to 8 washes. It might only tone down your roots rather than cover it completely, but better than nothing.

Hope that helps. Diane

Thank you so much Diane!! I’ll have a look into those ones, they might just keep me going for a while till I can colour it properly xx
