Zero sperm count - advice please

Hi all, looking for advice from others who may have been in a similar situation. Having been trying for a baby for 14 months we decided to get some tests done including a first semen sample; the results of which have come back today as having a zero count. My husband is very fit healthy so it was a bit of a shock and the doctor simply called with the result and said we would need to retest. We have no idea when that is or what the causes could be, and feel a bit in limbo. Can anyone help? Thanks

Hi

So sorry to read this, news like that with no explanation or support can be very hard to cope with. The best I can suggest is to ask the doctor for more information and look into books such as "it starts with an egg". On top of that hopefully someone on here can share their experiences with you.

Xxx

Hi NCS88,

Sorry to hear that you had no explanation from the doctor.

We have the same issue, my husband had two semen analysis completed before they could confirm the diagnosis or complete further tests.

If a second result comes back the same, they will likely refer him to a urologist who will test hormones and also do a karotyping blood test to look at any potential genetic factors.

I know how hard it hits when you first hear that result from the doctor, but there are so many potential steps forward, so please take it all one step at a time.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

There have been a few ladies on here that have also had to deal with this situation. I guess the reason for repeat is things can get better depending on the cause and sperm takes around 3 months to improve. Im sure you know but loose boxers, not smoking, no drugs, steriod use, eating healthy, cut back on alcohol are things that can be tried to help with sperm however that may not help in a situation of no sperm. My hubby has a very low sperm count but which they think has been caused by a childhood injury but he was checked to rule out genetic issues and can also be caused by a blockage. Its a shame you havent been able to speak to a professional before being hit with this. Look after hubby, this is a devastating thing to be told (and also for you of course), my husband was so scared I would leave him and told me he would understand if I wanted to bless him. Lots of reassurance and hugs required at that time. Hugs to you both, very hard news to hear.xx

Hi

They’ll probably want to do a second sperm test, and then you’ll want to push for a referral to urology I think to see if they can find a cause (in some cases it is treatable or even reversible).

I know it’s not always helpful to hear random success stories, but my friend’s partner had two zero sperm counts after they’d tried for about 14 months. Then he had one with a very low count with not much motility. And then they fell pregnant naturally. Baby was born last month. The only change was that he stopped working nights. I just want to let you know this so you can keep some hope whilst waiting for answers x

Ah we have had this situation, as have a few ladies on here. My OH was also fit and healthy and he kind of assumed the issue would be with me (I have a few health conditions) and so it came as a massive shock and he was in denial for quite a long time.

Maybe give the Dr a call and see when they want to do the retest (we only did one test and then went to the urologist), you may need to push for this...but it’s not all over. his sample might improve or they can do a small operation to see if they can get some surgically.

So sorry that you are having to go through this x

I think three months is the standard procedure for retesting. Get Hubby on a good ttc multi vitamin like wellman conception. If he drinks then get him to cut down, unless he barely drinks anything anyway. Same goes for caffeine. Cutting these things can help. No smoking. Loose underwear and no hot baths. If he starts all this now then he may see an improvement in three months xx

Hey hun

I'm so sorry to read this! We were faced with the same thing and our worlds fell apart. I still remember the day so clearly. In addition to the good advice from the other ladies. My OH had the initial test which showed zero sperm, he retested three months later and again it showed zero. He had further tests and went onto see a urologist who was optimistic that my OH had sperm but was not ejaculating. We were very lucky and had a successful sperm retrieval in May last year. It appears that he has a long standing issue with one of his tubes. They took enough sperm for two rounds of ICSI but to cut a long story short I'm 38weeks pregnant tomorrow. The GP we saw was brilliant and explained lots of things to my OH right from the start. Maybe you and your OH could book an appointment. Male infertility is so difficult my OH has needed a lot of reassurance throughout. It's something that affects you both.

Wishing you both so much luck and if you have any questions xx

Hi, my husband was tested and had zero, and he was tested a 2nd time, that came back zero. He has since been diagnosed with kleinfelters syndrome. This was suspected with a few various tests overtime. It’s a hard thing to hear for your husband and yourself. Take care of each other and my advice would be to just to keep on at your gp to find the cause , good luck and if I can help I’m here xx

Hi all thank you for taking the time to reply I really appreciate the support. It has been a rollercoaster of emotions this weekend but I think we will try and just try and take one step at a time. Hard to think of that initially as everything is constantly going through your head. Today we went to the doctors and have a referral to the infertility clinic and my husband has also had some basic hormone blood tests done. We will also wait for the 2nd semen analysis appointment to come through. Now to try and put this away in a box in the back of our minds and unpack it again after the festive family celebrations. Thanks all xx
